Maryland walks in off a workmanlike win over UNLV, still buzzing from a new coach and a frontcourt finally back to full strength. Gonzaga arrives having just gone ten rounds with Alabama and leaving the Tide buried under missed boxouts and bruises. Both teams know the bracket prestige runs through this game. The number at -14.5 and a total at 157.5 just asks how long Maryland can stay upright. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Maryland Terrapins.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Gonzaga vs. Maryland prediction, preview
Maryland’s identity showed clearly against UNLV. They scored 74 while shooting 42.4% from the floor and 29% from three, yet owned the heavy parts of the box. The Terps crushed the glass 46–34, with 16 offensive rebounds, and hit 15 of 21 free throws. Pharrel Payne took over after halftime, finishing with 20 points on 7-for-8 and eight boards, most of the damage coming once they really committed to playing through him. David Coit and Darius Adams added perimeter scoring, but Maryland also threw away 20 possessions, gifting 25 points off turnovers. Across the season, they sit in the low 80s on roughly 43% shooting and just above 32% from deep. The lifeline is the stripe: mid-20s made free throws at better than 80%, often doubling their opponents. When the whistle cooperates, they look tough. When it doesn’t, the giveaways and patchy perimeter defense catch up fast.
Gonzaga just handled a nastier version of that challenge. Against Alabama, they dropped 95 while shooting 48.6% overall and 27.3% from three. The separation came once the shot went up. The Zags won the boards 48–36, including 20 offensive rebounds, and carved out 52 points in the paint. Graham Ike and Braden Huff combined for 39 points and 19 rebounds on 19-for-30 shooting. Tyon Grant-Foster stacked another 21, while Mario Saint-Supéry and Steele Venters piled free throws. On the season, Gonzaga is hovering in the mid-90s offensively, giving up barely more than 60, and living around a plus-14 rebounding margin. Opponents are stuck in the mid-30s from the field and mid-20s from deep. It’s relentless interior pressure backed by enough shooting and guard depth to keep the floor very high.
Maryland vs. Gonzaga pick, best bet
Maryland’s argument leans on chaos and whistles. Payne gives them a real answer on the block, and Coit can absolutely light up a neutral floor. If Payne wins the early wrestling match, puts Ike on the bench with two fouls, and Coit’s pull-up game earns bonus trips, Maryland can easily stack another night with a double-digit free-throw edge. Add a little post-Alabama lethargy from Gonzaga and the backdoor appears: Zags up twenty, Mark Few rotates deep, Coit and Adams hit late jumpers, and this lands inside the number. The Terps have already dragged Marquette into a shootout and survived an overtime race with Mount St. Mary’s; they are comfortable in messy games.
I still trust Gonzaga’s advantages more than Maryland’s variables. The rebounding gap is baked into who the Zags are, not a one-night spike. If they once again live near 15 or more extra boards, Maryland’s turnover issues become a liability they can’t hide. Few can keep throwing fresh guards at Coit, using Saint-Supéry and Jalen Warley to bother his handle without surrendering size behind them. On the second night, when legs sag and closeouts slow, I trust the deeper, bigger roster to keep stacking layups, put-backs, and free throws while Maryland tries to manufacture half-court answers.
The tempo and foul profile steer me toward points as well. Gonzaga wants to run off every rebound, and Maryland’s turnover rate helps that plan. The Terps foul, chase from behind, and then grind their own possessions through Payne and the stripe. That means a high possession count with plenty of clock stoppages and free points. I expect Gonzaga to lean back into Ike and Huff, force Maryland to collapse inside, and then let the guards pick spots when the rim crowds.
So I’m staying aggressive. Gonzaga’s size, depth, and efficiency should stretch this beyond what Maryland’s whistle and late-game variance can cover. I’ll lay the big number and still lean into offense.
Give me Gonzaga -14.5, with the Zags cruising to something like a 90–72 win that nudges us over 157.5.
Best bet: Gonzaga -14.5 vs. Maryland
