Las Vegas gets the purest hoop hit of Feast Week tonight. Alabama wants chaos, Gonzaga wants control and trophies. Alabama already owns headline wins over St John’s and Illinois, with the Purdue loss framed as growing pains. Gonzaga has spent November crushing everyone, barely breaking a sweat through Oklahoma, Creighton, and Arizona State. This feels less like a neutral and more like a laboratory test of which program is closer to March form. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Gonzaga vs. Alabama prediction, preview
Alabama brings real fireworks. They’re scoring 91.0 points per game, shooting 45.5% from the field, and launching 38 threes nightly. They hit 35.1% from deep, about 13 makes, stacking quick nine-point bursts off broken floors. Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway combine for well over 30 a night, with Philon also steering five-plus assists. Oats gives them freedom to pull off drag screens early in the clock, which keeps possession counts inflated. They even protect the ball, averaging 15.0 assists against only 7.7 turnovers, so empty trips are rare. The problem lives underneath: opponents average 82.8 points, 46.0% shooting, 37.1% from three, and 44.7 rebounds. Purdue just bludgeoned them 52–28 on the glass, with cutters finishing uncontested once the bigs were displaced. Against high-major size, that interior profile keeps recurring rather than disappearing as a one-night bruise.
Gonzaga is built to punish exactly that flaw. The Zags are 5–0, averaging 94.0 points while allowing only 57.8 in comfortable double-digit wins. They’re hitting 53.1% overall and holding opponents to 33.3% from the field and 23.6% from three. The rebounding gap is gigantic: 46.4 boards per game against only 31.2 allowed, about a +15 margin. Graham Ike and Braden Huff combine for over 30 points and 14 boards on elite efficiency. Both sit above 58% from the floor. Ike lives on deep seals and foul pressure, while Huff floats into pick-and-pop space and long close-outs. Tyon Grant-Foster and Jalen Warley clean the defensive glass, then push into early offense without sacrificing spacing. Their guards swarm too; Mario Saint-Supery and Adam Miller pressure handlers, piling up steals and forcing rushed outlets. Ismaila Diagne erases drives with nearly two blocks per game, giving them real back-line insurance when perimeter contests slip. KenPom has Gonzaga top ten in offense and top five in defense for a reason. Those ratings already include Creighton, Oklahoma, and Arizona State.
Alabama vs. Gonzaga pick, best bet
I hear you Roll Tide folks. The Alabama case is clear tonight. The Alabama case is clear. Their schedule has real teeth, they’ve already hung 103 on St John’s and detonated Illinois from deep. Their adjusted offense actually grades a tick higher than Gonzaga’s, and +4.5 feels generous when you picture Philon and Holloway trading haymakers for 40 minutes. The problem is how thin that path really is. Alabama’s wins have come when the threes fly and stay clean; when they don’t, the defense and rebounding don’t give them much insulation. They’re living with a defense that leaks efficient looks and a front line that has already been shoved around by elite size. Gonzaga, meanwhile, owns comfortable double-digit wins over Creighton and Oklahoma without asking for outlier shooting nights, just their normal efficiency and physicality. Their guards actually bother the arc, their bigs pile free throws and second chances, and that frontcourt edge over Alabama’s lighter interior is more structural than hot-hand. Over 40 possessions of real half-court, Alabama needs the variance; Gonzaga just needs the matchup to behave.
At 178.5, the total is daring us to chase pace. Both teams run, but Gonzaga can slow possessions by playing through Ike on the block. Their half-court sets still produce high-value shots while draining clock, and their rebounding should suppress Alabama’s second-chance threes. I expect Alabama’s guards to land some early fireworks, then see the Zags’ size and discipline gradually tilt the evening.
I’m laying the points with the more complete machine. Gonzaga’s interior scoring, rebounding edge, and connected defense should wear down Alabama’s shot-making over forty minutes.
Give me Gonzaga -4.5, with the Zags winning something like 92–84.
Best bet: Gonzaga -4.5 vs. Alabama
