Virginia Cavaliers vs. Northwestern Wildcats prediction, pick for NCAAM on Friday 11/21/25

Virginia arrives 4–0 under Ryan Odom, suddenly playing fast and scoring in the nineties instead of grinding. Northwestern matches that unbeaten record and brings a Big Ten scoring champion in Nick Martinelli plus a tougher schedule spine. This is a neutral court, not Charlottesville or Evanston, and recent tournament chaos sits fresh in my mind. Whoever controls tempo and turnovers decides whether we see another barnburner or a choppier, whistle-heavy afternoon. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Virginia Cavaliers and the Northwestern Wildcats.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

UVA vs. Northwestern prediction, preview

Virginia’s early shine is undeniable. They’re posting 90.8 points per game and allowing 61.5 for a gaudy plus 29.3 margin. They’re hitting 50.0 percent from the field with a 61.6 true shooting mark, knocking down 11.3 threes and 17.5 free throws per night. They’re also pulling 41.5 rebounds with 19.0 assists and just 9.8 turnovers. Thijs De Ridder leads at 17.2 points and 7.5 rebounds, punishing mismatches and stretching the floor. Johann Grunloh adds 10.3 points, 7.5 boards and 4.2 blocks, one of the nastiest rim-protecting lines in the country. Around them, Dallin Hall organizes, Chance Mallory hunts steals, and Sam Lewis barely misses with a ridiculous efficiency clip. On paper, that looks like a top-25 machine being asked to cover two possessions on a neutral.

The context softens it. All four wins came at home, and they came against opponents Virginia was supposed to bully. The scoring spikes and block numbers are inflated by size and scheme advantages that shrink when you step up in class. KenPom still only plants them in the middle of the top-60, which tells you the predictive stuff is lagging far behind the highlight scores. This is exactly the kind of profile that markets overprice when the first real test hits a neutral floor.

Northwestern brings less noise and more proof. They’re at 84.2 points scored and 60.2 allowed, with an SRS north of 19 that sits in “strong both ways” territory. Nick Martinelli remains the hub, right back around 20 points and six boards, stretching the floor and closing games at the line. Arrinten Page bangs to 8.2 rebounds with real rim protection and touch. Jayden Reid runs the offense at 5.8 assists and already posted a 17-and-eight line in the Boston University rout. They hammered Cleveland State 110–63 on 60.3 percent shooting and 52.4 percent from three. More importantly, they just went through a real scrap at DePaul and won 81–79 in a game with constant swings, Page going 10-for-11 and Martinelli sealing it at the stripe. That is not empty blowout energy; that is closing a high-major road fight.

Northwestern vs. UVA pick, best bet

Virginia owns the higher offensive ceiling, the nastier shot-blocking core and the fresher scheme. Northwestern owns the more proven stress test and the best late-clock scorer on the floor. On a true home court, I probably live with Virginia laying two possessions and trust the twin towers to smother. On this Greenbrier neutral, with favorites all week winning without covering and one losing outright, I want the points when the efficiency gap is mostly schedule-driven. Virginia can still win this, but asking them to sustain home-blowout efficiency against a top-25-ish opponent that has already survived adversity is a tax I don’t love paying.

The line sits at Virginia -4.5 with a total of 146.5. I expect tempo to be healthy—both teams are comfortable in the seventies—but for shot quality to tighten once the first adrenaline flush wears off. That script favors a one- or two-possession game more often than a Cavaliers runaway. I’m happy to respect Virginia’s heater in the moneyline conversation while letting Northwestern’s continuity, tested star power and neutral-site variance work for us against the spread.

So we’ll take the short number, given the context of Virginia’s scorcher. It is, thought, ever so tight.

Final score: Virginia 77, Northwestern 74.

Best bet: Northwestern +4.5 (-115) vs. Virginia
