The Provident Credit Union Event Center turns into a late-night lab here. Southern brings another suitcase game and a chaos engine that just dropped 99 in double overtime at Washington. San Jose State finally tasted a win by hanging 110 on Bethesda and wants that to be a launchpad, not a mirage. This is SWAC pace against Mountain West structure, with a total near 150 and a short favorite that still hasn’t proven much against real resistance. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the San Jose State Spartans and the Southern University Jaguars.

SJSU vs. Southern prediction, preview
Southern’s identity is impossible to miss once you crack the box scores. They’re scoring 99.2 points and allowing 84.6, a +14.6 margin in a road-heavy start. They hit 50.4% from the field and 39.5% from three with 9 made threes a night and 18.6 made free throws, even if 66.4% at the stripe leaves meat on the bone. They win the glass 41.4 to 37.8 and, more importantly, win the turnover war by more than 5 per game, forcing 18.8 while giving it away only 13.4 times. Michael Jacobs lives at 22.0 points on 50.7% shooting and 43.8% from deep; DaMariee Jones and Malek Abdelgowad both sit in double figures with real rebounding and paint finishing. Cam Amboree runs it at 8.2 points, 5.2 assists and 3.4 steals. Twelve players log real minutes. The pace never really drops.
San Jose State comes at the matchup from the opposite angle. Through four games they sit at 79.8 points and 76.0 allowed, a modest +3.8 margin. They shoot 50.2% from the floor and 35.6% from three, with 35.5 rebounds, 11.8 assists and 11.8 turnovers. Colby Garland is everything: 22.5 points and 4.3 assists on 66.7% shooting and 57.1% from three, the hub for almost every late-clock decision. Yaphet Moundi adds 9.5 points and 10.0 boards as the lone true interior presence. Ben Roseborough and Jermaine Washington both hover in double figures and can punish sagging help from the arc. Their one win was that 110–56 detonation of Bethesda, where they shot in the mid-60s from the floor and over 50% from three while winning the glass by almost 40.
Southern vs. SJSU pick, best bet
There are real cracks in Southern +5.5. If Garland stays nuclear, the turnover gap shrinks and San Jose State’s offense looks like the only grown-up in the room, especially when Southern is already giving up 84.6 points and facing a team hitting 50.2% from the field. If whistles pile on Jacobs, Jones or Amboree, that twelve-man rotation suddenly includes guys you don’t want guarding in space. And in a fast game where both sides touch eighty, a few late free throws can stretch three-point games to eight in a blink and make that -5.5 story look very on-script.
I’m still grabbing the points because more of our darts land on Southern’s chaos holding up. They force 18.8 turnovers and squeeze roughly 25.6 points from those miscues; that is exactly the kind of leverage you want against a favorite that hasn’t stared down pressure for forty yet and whose raw margin leans heavily on one Bethesda blowout instead of consistent control against Utah, UC Santa Barbara and Michigan State. Southern’s pace and depth just dragged Washington into ninety-nine and double overtime on the road, which tells me their style travels. Jacobs’ 22.0 points on over 50% shooting with real threes gives them a closer who can answer Garland’s runs instead of hoping for system buckets. Amboree’s 5.2 assists and 3.4 steals backstop the style; he can lose some efficiency and still tilt possessions. They will make mistakes, but they will also make this deeply uncomfortable for a team whose cleanest work came in a stress-free blowout.
So I’m not pretending Southern +5.5 is bulletproof. I’m saying the combination of pace, depth, turnover pressure and scoring punch makes that number more attractive than laying it with a still-fragile favorite, especially after Texas Tech reminded us last night that a hot favorite can win and still torch your ticket. The most likely version has San Jose State surviving, not strolling—Garland gets his, the Spartans’ half-court offense looks clean when they actually organize, but Southern’s pressure keeps this inside two or three buckets and nudges the total toward the high side. Gut and math are aligned enough to live with the risks.
Final score: San Jose State 80, Southern 77.
