Jeff’s King of the Court Pick for Tuesday, November 18: Jalen Johnson
I’ve now hit three of the first four King of the Court picks, with all of them being decent favorites to claim the crown.
This Tuesday, we abandon the chalk. This slate is really intriguing, as there are a ton of moving parts. At the time of this article’s publication, the player I actually might like the most is Cade Cunningham, but his availability is completely up in the air. If Cunningham does suit up, I would give him heavy consideration to pick up where he left off before the hip injury. Luka Doncic’s prospects are also a mystery, as the potential return of LeBron James could result in a significant usage drop. If James does not suit up, Doncic deserves a serious look for KOTC as well.
All of that said, working with the information I have now, I’m going down the board a little bit and selecting Jalen Johnson, who has been on quite the tear lately. Operating as Atlanta’s No. 1 option with Trae Young sidelined, Johnson has been a couple assists off from a triple-double in three of his last four outings, actually recording one against the Jazz. That performance against Utah is exactly what I needed to see to choose him this week, as he racked up a ridiculous 31 points, 18 rebounds and 14 assists while only seeing a 30.5% usage rate. If Johnson can eclipse the 30-point mark against a decimated Pistons squad, he has a real shot at claiming the crown.
