Ja Morant Injury Update: Out At Least Two Weeks

Updated:

By: Alex Hunter

Ja Morant strained his right calf in Saturday’s loss to the Cavaliers and the guard will be re-evaluated in two weeks, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Morant has had a poor season thus far, averaging 17.9 PPG while shooting 36% from the field and 17% on three-pointers, all of which are career-lows for the guard. Given Morant’s struggles, the Grizzlies are just 4-10 and rank 25th in net rating.

With Morant sidelined, Vince Williams should start at point guard and Jaren Jackson Jr. should take on a huge usage rate as Memphis’ clear No. 1 option. With Morant off the floor this season, Jackson Jr.’s usage increases 5.1 percentage points to a team-high 29.4%. In the 34 starts Jackson Jr. has made without Morant the last two seasons, Jackson Jr. is leading the Grizzlies with 22.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Memphis next faces the Spurs on Tuesday night and the Grizzlies’ ugly start to the season should continue in this matchup.
