The Lakers are playing their second game in two nights Monday vs. the Trail Blazers and the club is going to be very shorthanded for this matchup. Luka Doncic (injury management) and Austin Reaves (groin) have both been ruled out, and Deandre Ayton (back) is questionable. Also, LeBron James (sciatica) remains sidelined and has yet to make his season debut.
With James out, Doncic has put up incredible numbers this season, leading the NBA with 41.3 PPG to go along with 11.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game. Reaves has also been stellar, averaging 31.3 points, 9.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game. Doncic and Reaves lead Los Angeles in usage rate this season, at 39.3% and 29.5%, respectively, and with these two unavailable Monday, the Lakers will be led by Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, Jake LaRavia and Ayton if he suits up.
Dalton Knecht and Bronny James will also be in line for expanded roles. With James, Doncic and Reaves off the floor the last two seasons, Knecht is notably handling a 26% usage rate. If Ayton is also ruled out, Jaxson Hayes will likely start at center.
The Lakers are 1-2 with James, Doncic and Reaves inactive the last two seasons and following the news of Doncic and Reaves joining James on the sidelines, the Trail Blazers have moved to an 8.5-point favorite over Los Angeles on DraftKings Sportsbook.
