Mississippi State vs. Arkansas: Brenen Thompson Anytime TD (-110)
There is a decent chance that Mississippi State vs. Arkansas is the highest-scoring game of the weekend in college football. These are two of the most explosive offenses in the conference, with two of the worst defenses in the conference. Mississippi State has played a game this season that finished in the 60s, one in the 70s and last week against Texas finished in the 80s. Meanwhile, Arkansas’ games have finished with an average total of 58.8 points. This should be a back-and-forth shootout, with plenty of scoring chances for both teams. On the Bulldogs’ side, that likely means a touchdown for Brenen Thompson.
Thompson leads the Bulldogs in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns on the season. While Anthony Evans III has been the main possession receiver, Thompson is the big-play threat. The Oklahoma transfer can turn any catch into an explosive play with his great speed and agility in the open field. Thompson is coming off a two-touchdown performance against Texas last week. That makes it seven total touchdowns for Thompson on the season. Against an Arkansas defense that ranks 118th in defensive EPA/play, Thompson should be able to break one loose for a score.
Indiana vs. Maryland: Fernando Mendoza 3+ TD Passes (-106)
Fernando Mendoza is a serious Heisman candidate this season. Mendoza has taken Indiana to the next level with his exceptional play. This was a deserving playoff team last season, but they couldn’t reach the levels of the elite teams in college football. However, this season, the Hoosiers are a legitimate top-tier college football team with Mendoza at the helm. Not only is he putting up huge numbers, but Curt Cignetti wants Mendoza to win the award.
He is running up the score every week and giving Mendoza as many chances as possible to run up his numbers. Mendoza has thrown for at least three touchdowns in five out of eight games this season, including each of the past two weeks. This Maryland defense has faced a weak slate of opposing quarterbacks this season, but when they faced a real dude, Dylan Raiola, he threw for four touchdowns. Mendoza should keep his hot streak going and throw for at least three scores in this game.
Miami vs. SMU: CJ Daniels Anytime TD (+100)
Miami is looking to get back on track against SMU. The Hurricanes lost their first game of the season against Louisville, then followed that up with a trouncing of Stanford last week. The Hurricanes cannot let one loss kill the momentum they had going leading up to that game. They have a relatively easy run through the rest of their ACC schedule to get into the conference title game with a CFP berth on the line. That game against Stanford showed that they were able to get back on track and should remain focused for this game. When Miami’s offense is clicking, it usually means that CJ Daniels is playing a big role.
Miami has a well-balanced offense, with a real threat on the ground and through the air. SMU has been elite at stopping the run this season, ranking sixth in defensive EPA/rush. That means the Hurricanes will likely have to do their damage through the air this week. Carson Beck will be looking to Daniels early and often. Freshman sensation Malachi Toney takes a lot of the headlines, but Daniels has twice as many receiving touchdowns as Toney. This two-headed monster is hard for any defense to stop, but Toney often takes more of the attention from defenses. At 6’2 205 pounds with strong hands, Daniels is the top end zone target for Beck. Last week against Stanford, he showed how special he is by reaching around a defender’s body to catch a touchdown on a classic goal-line fade call. Daniels has three touchdowns in his past three games and has a great chance to score another one against SMU.
