Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will be sidelined for at least the next two weeks due to a hamstring injury, ESPN’s Shams Charania announced Monday. Edwards left last night’s matchup agains the Pacers after just three minutes of play after feeling tightness in his hamstring. He will miss tonight’s game against the Nuggets along with several more, with matchups against the Lakers, Hornets, Nets, Knicks, Jazz, and Kings all on the schedule over this stretch.
This is a tough blow to a Timberwolves team with championship aspirations this season. They have flown a bit under the radar in a loaded Western Conference despite coming off back-to-back Conference Finals appearances. Minnesota is off to a 2-1 start to the season thus far.
Edwards has gotten off to a strong start to the season, scoring 41 points and seven rebounds in the season opener. He followed this up with 31 points, five assists, and four rebounds in the team’s second game against the Lakers. The three-time All-Star had five points in the opening 3:08 of game play in last night’s game before exiting due to the injury.
Hamstring issues can have a tendency to linger and Minnesota is wisely being proactive with their star in the early parts of this season. There is still plenty of basketball left to be played this year and the Timberwolves will be waiting on their star to return from injury before they reach their peak once again. Expect players like Donte DiVincenzo, Jaden McDaniels, Bones Hyland, and Terrance Shannon Jr. to see their roles scaled up in his absence.
For Monday’s game, DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Timberwolves as 6.5-point underdogs at home against the Nuggets.
