Life in the SEC isn’t for the faint of heart. Oklahoma has found that out the hard way. Despite their #13 AP Poll ranking, the 6-1 Sooners can hardly afford another regular season loss.
That gives added importance to this weekend’s matchup. OU will welcome #8 Ole Miss to Norman in a high-stakes conference clash. The Rebels are one of the nation’s highest-scoring squads, averaging 37.4 points per game. However, the Sooners aren’t lacking in firepower, led by quarterback John Mateer.

John Mateer 2+ passing touchdowns (-123)
It’s been a solid, albeit slightly disappointing, SEC debut for Mateer. Through six games, the junior has thrown for 1,567 yards, ran for 209 more, and accumulated 12 total touchdowns. However, he’s also thrown six interceptions. The QB had an especially difficult outing two weeks ago against Texas. Fortunately for OU, the gunslinger rebounded with a better showing last Saturday vs. South Carolina.
Ole Miss is an offensively-minded football team. However, that’s not to say the defense is a pushover. This Rebels’ secondary ranks within the upper half of the SEC in opponent passing yards allowed. Still, they’ve also surrendered ten passing touchdowns, fifth-most in the conference. Mateer hasn’t thrown for multiple touchdowns since Week 1 vs. Illinois State. However, that’s mostly a product of Oklahoma holding a comfortable lead in most of its games. In what could be a back-and-forth affair, the Sooners will need to throw the ball. If Ole Miss sells out on stopping the run, Mateer should have room to work with in the end zone.
Dae’Quan Wright 44+ receiving yards (-109)
As previously mentioned, the Rebels wield one of the nation’s most dangerous offenses. That’s due in large part to their midseason quarterback change, turning to Trinidad Chambliss. Through seven games, the senior has thrown for 1,549 yards, ran for 323, and picked up 13 total touchdowns. It helps when you’re surrounded by elite pass catchers and dynamic running back Kewan Lacy. The bad news for Ole Miss? Oklahoma’s defense ranks first in total yards allowed per game (213.0).
A tenacious Sooners defensive line could cause trouble for Chambliss on Saturday afternoon. That means the QB will need to get the ball out of his hands quickly. 6’4″ Dae’Quan Wright could be an ideal target over the middle of the field. Through seven games this season, the senior has recorded 19 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns. It’s worth noting that Wright (undisclosed) is currently listed as questionable to play. If the tight end is available, he’s proven to be a difference-maker. The 22-year-old has notched at least 66 yards in three of his last four appearances. Don’t be shocked if that trend continues this weekend.
