North Texas vs. Charlotte: Wyatt Young Anytime TD (-110)
North Texas has suffered one conference loss to the American’s best team, South Florida. However, the Mean Green are still very much alive in the race for the American Conference title. North Texas has a very manageable schedule over the rest of the regular season and will just need some help to get its rematch against South Florida in the American title game, likely with a College Football Playoff spot on the line. This game against Charlotte is a great chance for this exciting offense to flex its muscles.
North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker ranks 16th in the country in passing yards and ninth in passing touchdowns. This is an electric passing offense, with Wyatt Young as its top target. Young leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. He has six receiving touchdowns on the season, twice as many as the next guy on the list. Young is coming off the best game of his career, where he went for 102 yards and three touchdowns against UTSA. After a game like that, Mestemaker will be looking his way early and often in this one. Charlotte’s defense is dreadful, ranking 132nd in the nation in defensive passing success rate. North Texas should take advantage of that and get the ball to Wyatt Young for at least one score.
Nevada vs. Boise State: Caleb Ramseur Anytime TD (+130)
It has been a disappointing season for Boise State by its usual standards. The Broncos were the first Group of Five team to get the automatic G5 bid in the expanded College Football Playoff last season. They had the Heisman runner-up, Ashton Jeanty, and looked like an unstoppable force against Mountain West competition. However, they opened their season with a loss to South Florida. That, in some ways, decided where the Group of Five playoff bid would go after just one game. If South Florida wins the American, they are almost guaranteed that playoff bid. Even if someone else beats South Florida in the American title game, they would likely get it over Boise State due to that transitive property argument.
Boise State is unlikely to be particularly motivated for these games against inferior Mountain West teams. The Broncos will still want to win the conference, of course, but they can come with their B-minus game and still beat Nevada. Boise State has an awful run defense, ranking 124th in the nation in defensive EPA/rush. Nevada should move it on the ground against a bad Boise State front seven, which is unlikely to have much fire in this game. That means that Caleb Ramseur, Nevada’s leading rusher, has a great chance to score. Ever since the Wolfpack changed from dual-threat quarterback Chubba Purdy to Carter Jones, Ramseur has played a bigger role in the red zone. Purdy often took it into the end zone himself, but now Ramseur is getting those touches. He scored two touchdowns last week against New Mexico and has a great chance to score in this game as well.
