Milwaukee Bucks point guard Kevin Porter Jr. suffered an ankle injury during Wednesday’s game against the Washington Wizards and will not return.
Around the end of the first quarter, Porter Jr. was defending Cam Whitmore and took some contact on a drive. Porter Jr. collided with a teammate and step on their foot. He then headed to the locker room immediately after before being ruled out with a left ankle sprain.
Porter Jr. started at point guard for the Bucks in the season opener and recorded 10 points with two assists in nine minutes of play. Offseason acquisition Cole Anthony likely sees more minutes, though Gary Trent Jr. or Ryan Rollins could also slot into his place.
At the time Porter Jr. departed by the end of the opening quarter, the Bucks led 43-23.
While the ankle injury doesn’t seem particularly serious, it could create some issue for Milwaukee if he misses time. The Bucks are already quite thin at guard and lack true playmakers in the backcourt. Porter Jr. is more of a scoring combo guard than anything else as well. Of course, more details will emerge on the severity soon, but it’s possible the team leans on Giannis Antetokounmpo more as a primary playmaker in the case that KPJ ends up sidelined.
