Life comes at you fast in the SEC. #10 LSU kicked off the 2025 season on a high note, with wins vs. Clemson and Florida. However, a surprisingly stagnant offense has cast doubts over the 5-1 Tigers. #17 Vanderbilt entered Week 6 undefeated, but a second-half collapse doomed them against Alabama.
A win on Saturday will boost the College Football Playoff hopes for one of these two schools. As for the loser, their chance at postseason play will take a major hit. Which of these two conference foes is poised for a pivotal victory? Below is my prediction and pick for College Football Week 8’s game between the LSU Tigers and the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Vandy enters this contest as 2.5-point favorites (-112) over LSU, with the over/under set at 48.5 points on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Commodores are favored at -135 on the moneyline.
LSU vs. Vanderbilt prediction, preview
What a difference one month has made in Baton Rouge. The Tigers looked like a bonafide national title contender during their 17-10 Week 1 victory over Clemson. While the defense remains a threat, it’s LSU’s offense that has created cause for concern. The Tigers have yet to score more than 20 points against any Power 4 opponent this season. That includes a 24-19 loss to Ole Miss in Week 5.
Entering the year, this was expected to be one of the SEC’s better offensive units. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has been shaky, throwing five interceptions over his previous four outings. Turning the ball over frequently is unsustainable for a team that hopes to reach the playoffs. A more ground-oriented approach, led by Caden Durham, could be the answer. This season, the running back has gained 283 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 67 carries (4.2 YPC). It’s no coincidence the sophomore was injured during LSU’s loss to Mississippi.
Running the ball could prove difficult against Vanderbilt’s tenacious defense. The Commodores are holding opponents to 90.8 rushing yards per game, the SEC’s fifth-best mark. To earn a win this weekend, the Tigers will likely need to air the ball out. Still, Vandy is fourth in the conference with 18.0 sacks, led by edge Myles Capers (4.5 Sk). LSU’s offensive line, with five new starters, has been inconsistent all season.
On the other side of the ball, Diego Pavia has made a name for himself at quarterback. Vanderbilt’s talented passer has thrown for 1,409 yards and 14 touchdowns while surrendering only four interceptions. However, he looked mediocre vs. Alabama (198 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT). LSU poses a similar, if not more daunting, challenge. This Tigers secondary ranks inside the SEC’s top five schools in passing yards per attempt (5.8) and interceptions (eight).
LSU vs. Vanderbilt pick, best bet
Both of these defenses are capable of dominating this game, even against high-caliber quarterbacks. Pavia looked unimpressive vs. ‘Bama, while Nussmeier has faltered in recent weeks. With that being said, LSU has played against far better opponents on average than the Commodores. Vandy’s most impressive win, a 31-7 victory over South Carolina, came with QB La’Norris Sellers missing the entire second half. I’ll fade the public and back the Tigers as underdogs on Saturday.
