Bryce Underwood has started to find his groove for Michigan in recent weeks. Underwood was the No. 1 recruit in his class, but it was uncertain whether or not he would start for Michigan this season as a true freshman. What Underwood showed his coaches over the summer was too promising to pass up. He got the start in Week 1, and while he has had some growing pains, he is starting to look like the special player many hoped he would be. Underwood has played two tough road games so far this season against Nebraska and Oklahoma. In those games, he struggled with throwing the football. He combined to go 21/46 for 247 yards and no touchdowns through the air. However, against Nebraska, he relied on his legs and it got his team the win.
Against the Cornhuskers, Underwood ran the ball for 81 yards and a score. In the game prior to that, he picked up 114 yards and two scores on the ground against Central Michigan. In a tough road test against a good USC team, he should rely on his legs again whenever he’s in trouble. This game should see a run-heavy approach from Michigan regardless. USC has one of the most explosive offenses in the country, and Sherrone Moore will want to keep that offense on the sideline as much as possible. It should be a run-heavy game plan for the Wolverines, and when they get close to the goal line, they will lean on their big, athletic quarterback to get the ball into the end zone himself.
Jayden Maiava 270+ Passing Yards (-107)
Jayden Maiava is one of the best quarterbacks in college football this season. USC fell just short in its one big game this season, which has kept the national spotlight off the team and its quarterback. However, this game against Michigan is a big chance for Maiava to show the nation what he is capable of. Maiava ranks second in the nation in passing yards per game so far this season. USC may have lost to Illinois in its biggest matchup of the season so far, but Maiava put on a show, throwing for 364 yards against the Fighting Illini.
Maiava is averaging 317.4 passing yards per game on the season and should get over this mark of 270 passing yards against Michigan. Michigan has a tough defense, but has been much more stout against the run than the pass. The Wolverines rank 12th in the nation in defensive EPA/rush, but 54th in defensive EPA/pass. They also rank 70th in defensive passing success rate. As long as the USC offensive line can hold up, Maiava should be able to keep the sticks moving through the air and get over his passing prop number.
