Kennesaw State Owls vs. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs prediction, pick for CFB Week 7 on Thursday 10/9/25

The lights settle over Kennesaw, and the new FBS badge still shines fresh on Owls jerseys. Louisiana Tech arrives with 4–1 ballast, a 2–0 conference stride, and a line that hangs at six with a 46.5 total. The Bulldogs carry a +8 turnover margin and a defense that allows 13.6 points per game, so every drive feels precious. Kennesaw State hunts a first real scalp in this window, leaning on air burst and home noise. Tech answers with measured tempo, short-game precision, and a habit of turning field position into pressure. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 7’s game between the Kennesaw State Owls and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Kennesaw State vs. Louisiana Tech prediction, preview

Structure favors the visitors. Louisiana Tech sits 4–1 overall and 2–0 in Conference USA, carrying a +8 turnover margin through five games—2nd-best in the FBS. The Bulldogs allow only 13.6 points per game and end 75.5% of opponent drives without points, 15th nationally. That stop rate pairs with an offense that accepts easy yards and strings first downs. Quarterback Blake Baker completes 63% of his passes and feeds the short and intermediate zones that keep the ground game alive. Sonny Cumbie still runs the ball on roughly 63% of snaps, one of the lowest pass-play rates in the nation, but the aerial threat gives every down rhythm. Louisiana Tech does not chase chaos; it manufactures certainty.

Kennesaw State must live on air damage. The Owls rank 44th in passing explosiveness and will dial deep shots to rip tempo open. Wide receiver Gabriel Benyard stretches coverage with each route, averaging nearly 17 yards per catch, and his burst shapes their scoring path. Louisiana Tech’s defense has been slightly vulnerable to explosives, ranked in the bottom 50 nationally in defending big pass plays, but everything else tightens. The Bulldogs smother early downs and force third-and-longs where Kennesaw’s offense shrinks.

The trenches tell the deeper truth. Kennesaw State has managed only six sacks through five games and rarely disturbs rhythm. Opponents consistently avoid negative plays; the Owls rank 130th in Havoc Rate allowed. That softness in the rush feeds Louisiana Tech’s balance. Baker should operate in comfort behind a line that allows him to cycle quick reads, set up play-action, and pick soft seams. The Owls’ red-zone defense compounds the issue, surrendering scores on 63.6% of opponent trips inside the twenty—one of the worst marks in FBS play. That’s blood in the water for an offense built on patience.

Drive finishing has been an issue. Kennesaw State has reached the red zone 16 times this season and scored only eight touchdowns, a 50% conversion rate that ranks 7th-worst nationally. Louisiana Tech’s defense, meanwhile, allows the 2nd-fewest points per drive inside the forty and holds foes to a red-zone scoring rate of just 63.6%. When the field shortens, Tech becomes suffocating. The Owls’ path demands hitting home runs from distance because they cannot live in close quarters.

Louisiana Tech leads the nation with 11 interceptions and sits 1st in picks per game. Cornerback Jhamal Shelby Jr. has broken up eight passes, tied for most in the country, and finds the football with perfect timing. Kennesaw State’s quarterbacks have done well to limit interceptions, but their deep-ball reliance invites risk. A single underthrown go route can turn into a short field and a 7-point swing. Louisiana Tech’s defense thrives in those collisions of aggression and precision.

Louisiana Tech vs. Kennesaw State pick, best bet

Kennesaw State can steal two explosives and play the emotion of its first FBS showcase. Louisiana Tech has shown modest rushing explosiveness—ranked near the bottom in EPA per rush—and can bog down if penalties mount. If possessions compress to eight per team and tempo stutters, a single big play could alter the tone. But the efficiency gap looms.

Louisiana Tech ends three of every four drives without damage. Kennesaw State converts only half of its red-zone visits into touchdowns. The Bulldogs create 11 turnovers and protect the ball with just five giveaways through five games. The Owls lack the pass rush or coverage integrity to dislodge that consistency. The arithmetic favors gradual separation over volatility.

Louisiana Tech carries the sturdier situational DNA, the higher success rate, and the sharper red-zone balance. Kennesaw State needs three explosives and mistake-free efficiency to keep pace, which strains under sustained third downs. The Bulldogs should stretch separation late and underline their Conference USA intent. I see it like this: Jhamal Shelby Jr. will have a moment. He’ll bait one sideline fade, undercut it, and flip a possession near midfield. That turnover should yield the short field that decides tempo. His range and closing burst project a momentum swing that sparks Tech’s decisive drive. Once ahead by two scores, Cumbie’s offense can slow the rhythm and let the defense close the gate.

Final score: Louisiana Tech 27, Kennesaw State 13. Lay the points with the Bulldogs.

Best bet: Louisiana Tech -6 (-110) vs. Kennesaw State
