Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles prediction, pick for CFB Week 7 on Thursday 10/9/25

The October air in Statesboro carries its own charge, that blend of humidity and tension that swells before kickoff. Georgia Southern leans on tempo and space, the rhythm of a team that trusts its arm more than its legs. Southern Miss arrives heavier, steadier, carrying an identity built on structure, leverage, and violence at the line. The number sits tight at three, and yet the matchup hums uneven. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 7’s game between the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Georgia Southern vs. Southern Miss prediction, preview

Southern Miss comes in 3–2, winners of two straight and fresh off a 225-yard rushing night that redefined their balance. Quarterback Braylon Braxton has stabilized the offense, completing 65% of his passes for 11 touchdowns and guiding a group that averages nearly 400 yards per game. The Golden Eagles’ turnover margin sits at +6 with only four giveaways in five games, a mark of control that matches their physicality. Georgia Southern bleeds yards—481 per game allowed, 7.0 per play—and owns the lowest defensive Success Rate in the FBS at 136th. Every opponent has topped 200 rushing yards, and three have crossed 300. That’s not variance; it’s surrender.

Southern Miss should sense that softness early. Frank Gore Jr. runs behind a line that finally carved open lanes last week, and that improvement should travel. Braxton’s mobility adds stress to an already eroding front. Georgia Southern has produced just four sacks and 22 tackles for loss, rarely altering rhythm. They’ve allowed scores on 63.6% of red-zone trips and now face an opponent that thrives on time and body blows. Expect Huff to call a methodical script—zone reads, bootlegs, patient play-action—until those linebackers hesitate. The mismatch in trench leverage feels decisive.

The numbers confirm the pattern. Georgia Southern ends only 45% of opponent drives without points, while Southern Miss owns the conference’s best tackling grade. That differential matters on the edges, where the Eagles’ short passing game tries to live. Georgia Southern converts modestly—59% completions, 946 yards, seven touchdowns—but ranks 127th in EPA per pass. They throw 40 times a game but generate little explosive damage, just 6.2 yards per attempt. With a run game that sometimes stalls under 30 yards, the passing tree becomes predictable.

Southern Miss’s defense, coordinated by Dan O’Brien, should choke those lanes. The Golden Eagles’ secondary grades 2nd in the Sun Belt and has eight interceptions already. Their tackling precision erases YAC and forces Georgia Southern into endless third downs. That’s the geometry of suffocation: no chunk plays, no clock control, no field position. Southern Miss can drop seven into coverage and still stop the run, daring redshirt freshman JC French to throw into tight windows. Once the field condenses inside the red zone, Georgia Southern’s lack of ground threat turns the field claustrophobic.

Southern Miss vs. Georgia Southern pick, best bet

The countercase sits on Georgia Southern’s tempo and chaos. They run over 70 plays a game and can generate sudden rhythm when short throws connect in sequence. Clay Helton’s teams often ride that first-quarter burst before fading. If Southern Miss misses tackles early or Braxton commits his first multi-turnover game, the pace could quicken. Georgia Southern’s home tempo and crowd energy create momentary pulse, but every statistical thread points to regression. Their defense wears out after halftime, allowing an average of 20.8 second-half points this season.

Southern Miss has no reason to rush. They win games by limiting variance—controlling possession, leaning into contact, shortening fields. Georgia Southern averages under 26 minutes of possession per game, 119th nationally, and that imbalance should grow. By the fourth quarter, the physical toll will surface: Southern Miss converting short-yardage runs while the Eagles’ front gasps for air.

Turnovers and third downs will swing the margin, and both favor the road side. Southern Miss generates an interception every 23 pass attempts; Georgia Southern throws one every 24. The probabilities merge toward another turnover or two, and in a game projected near 60 possessions, that tilt is decisive. Field position will follow: Southern Miss should start multiple drives near midfield, amplifying their efficiency edge.

The market’s line reflects skepticism about separation, but efficiency metrics reject that caution. Southern Miss ranks top 40 in EPA per play, Georgia Southern bottom 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. If those hold, the spread remains too shallow. Expect Huff’s team to control pace, stretch the field horizontally, and finish drives behind Gore’s patience. The total of 55 leans high, but Georgia Southern’s erratic scoring keeps the over fragile; the side offers the cleaner edge.

Final score: Southern Miss 34, Georgia Southern 24. Southern Miss owns the sturdier DNA: sharper tackling, cleaner turnovers, steadier trench play. Georgia Southern needs three takeaways or sudden tempo miracles to cover this spread. The numbers, the film, and the physics all aggregate in a vector pointing to the same outcome.

Best bet: Southern Miss -3 (-120) at Georgia Southern
