Facing elimination on enemy territory, the Fightin’ Phils didn’t back down. On Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Phillies chased dominant Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto after just four innings — then tagged all-time great Clayton Kershaw for five runs en route to an 8-2 victory in Game 3 of the NL Division Series.
The Phillies still trail 1-2 after dropping the first two games at home, but a win on Thursday night would send the series right back to Citizens Bank Park for a winner-take-all Game 5 — the rowdiest place to be with the season on the line.
Philadelphia can’t afford to let off the gas pedal for even a second against the defending World Series champs — but luckily, their top slugger just shifted into high gear.

No matter the stage, Kyle Schwarber hits tanks. The lefty slugger — who mashed 56 bombs this season — has homered in the AL and NL Wild Card rounds, gone deep in the Division and Championship Series, touched ’em all in the World Series, cleared the wall in the World Baseball Classic, and walked it off in July’s All-Star Game swing-off.
It should come as no surprise that he finally came alive on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. After going hitless in the first two games of the series, Schwarber connected for two no-doubters in Game 3. Statcast says he hit 823 feet worth of home runs — but that feels like an understatement. His first blast, a fourth-inning solo shot off Yamamoto, left Dodger Stadium. There’s still no confirmation that the ball has landed.
On Thursday night, Schwarber steps into the box against fearsome righty Tyler Glasnow, who posted a 3.19 ERA, 1.10, and 106 strikeouts across 90.1 innings this season. He delivered 1.2 innings of relief in L.A.’s Game 1 victory on Oct. 4 — and fanned the lefty slugger on just three pitches.
Schwarber has struggled against Glasnow in his career, going just 2-for-13 with nine strikeouts and no homers. But that stat is a bit misleading. Game 1 marked Schwarber’s first encounter with the right-hander since April, and he’s had just five at-bats against him since June 2021.
The slugger currently has +206 odds to go yard again on Thursday night — and coming off a two-home run performance, facing a right-hander, it’s not ridiculous to like those odds. In fact, Schwarber recorded 14 back-to-back home run games this season, including three separate stretches where he homered in three straight.
Schwarber’s homers seem to come in bunches. Still, I prefer a slightly more modest bet of 2+ total bases — something he did at will this season, boasting the second-best slugging percentage in the NL (.563). He could accomplish with a pair of base knocks or one vintage Schwarbomb.
