Auston Matthews to Score a Goal (+105)
It’d be foolish to fade the G.O.A.T. of season-openers, Auston Matthews, who has scored 12 goals across nine season-opening games. We should’ve seen this coming when he scored four goals in his NHL debut at 19 years old. Toronto was shut out in last season’s season-opener against Montreal, but won the other three games versus the club by an average of three goals. Sam Montembeault was a consistent netminder for the Habs in 2024, ranking fifth in goals saved above expected and 10th in save percentage above expected. Still, Matthews has scored nine goals in his last 13 meetings versus the Habs and will want to prove that he doesn’t need Marner to thrive offensively.
Matias Maccelli to Record 1+ Point (+120)
If I’m backing Matthews to score a goal, it’s only right to choose one of his linemates to record a point, and my eyes are on Matias Maccelli, a promising 24-year-old winger who is looking to bounce back after a rough season in Utah. Maccelli posted just 18 points across 55 games in 2024, but posted at least 49 points in the previous two seasons, including ranking top three on the team in points and assists per 60. He has legit playmaking ability and found success during the preseason, totaling four assists.
Noah Dobson to Record 3+ Blocked Shots (+295)
It’s a bit juicy, but it was certainly intriguing enough for me to dive deep into team shot type percentages and find that the Maple Leafs ranked fourth in slap shot percentage in 2024. That makes me think that there could be plenty of pucks shot from the point, which could lead to blocked shots for the Habs. Cue Noah Dobson. Dobson ranked third among Islanders’ defensemen in blocked shots last season and is now slotted on Montreal’s top line. Toronto totaled 34+ shots on goal in 3-of-4 games versus Montreal last season (48 in the season opener), and Dobson has cleared this line in three of his past five meetings versus the Leafs.
