On Tuesday night, the opening slate of the 2025-26 NHL season wraps up with a matchup on the West Coast. In this late-night affair, the Los Angeles Kings welcome the Colorado Avalanche to town for a playoff-caliber showdown. Will Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar spoil the first night of the Anze Kopitar retirement tour, or can Adrian Kempe and Co. start the campaign in the win column?

Cale Makar 4+ shots on goal (+165)

A definitive top-two offensive contributor at his position around the NHL, Cale Makar just scored a whopping 30 goals last season as a defender, a feat which hadn’t been seen in over a decade. The 26-year-old is now healthier than last time we saw him on the ice and will certainly be counted on in a challenging first matchup against a Kings team which deployed a very good defense last year. Makar averaged 3.1 shots per game in 2024-25 and tallied four or more shots in 36 of his 87 total contests. As Colorado settles in with some new faces on their lines, it makes sense the team would run things through its stars a little more than usual and lean on Makar as well as Nathan MacKinnon. Again, he can produce at least four shots on goal tonight as the Avalanche look to pressure Darcy Kuemper to start the new campaign.

Anze Kopitar 1+ points (-130)

Entering year 20 of his career, Anze Kopitar is still producing points as one of the top options in the Kings’ lineup. Truly a legend of the franchise, the two-time Stanley Cup Winner ranks second in the franchise’s history with 1,278 career points. He’s already announced plans to retire after the season, but the odds he racks up 30 more this year to pass up Marcel Dionne certainly feel in his favor given a clean bill of health. Kopitar recorded a point in 50 of his 87 total games last year with a grand total of 67 on the season. Scott Wedgewood is in net for the Avalanche tonight and doesn’t look like a massive threat to stop everything coming his way, so the Kings will play fast to try and keep up with their opponents’ style.
