Heading into his 23rd season and at age 40, retirement has been a topic of discussion surrounding LeBron James for a few years now. But James created quite a stir in the NBA world on Monday with a cryptic post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, teasing “The decision of all decisions” — a callback to his iconic 2010 special, “The Decision.” The announcement is set for Oct. 7th at 12 p.m. ET.
The obvious takeaway from the post is the belief that James will be officially announcing his retirement. A 21-time All-Star, four-time MVP, and four-time NBA champion, James has accomplished just about everything humanly possible on a basketball court. He entered the league directly out of high school, hailed as an all-time great talent with some of the highest expectations of any player in all of professional sports. James not only found a way to reach this sky-high standard, but to further raise the bar.
If he were to walk away right now, James would hold the NBA record for most total points, most all-time playoff points, most All-NBA first team selections, most 20-point games, most consecutive double-digit scoring games, most playoff games, most playoff wins, and has been both the youngest and oldest player to record several significant accolades. He has been a dominant force on the NBA hardwood for over two decades, one of the top players in the league every step of the way.
It is also worth noting that James is plenty savvy in his off-court ventures as well. The future Hall of Famer is involved in a few media companies, investment groups, philanthropy opportunities, charity work, and even a pizza company. James and his team have shown plenty of creativity in their marketing through the years, and this would be an interesting advertising technique if he is just trying to draw attention.
To be fair to the four-time Finals MVP, James is coming off a season in which he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds across 70 games. He earned All-NBA second team honors and was sixth in the NBA in MVP voting. He may not be reaching the sky-high standard of being the best player in basketball, as had become commonplace for the majority of his career, but James can still play if he wants to.
Plenty of attention was paid to Bronny James being drafted and signed to the Lakers as they became the first father-son duo to play at the same time for the same team. LeBron had made it a clear goal to remain in the league until Bronny was able to join him, and he was successful in this. Bronny suited up for 27 games with the Lakers last season while spending some time in the G League.
The Luka Doncic trade also shook the NBA world and had quite the impact on James directly. There have been plenty of concerns that decisions are now being made on Doncic’s timeline rather than James’, and how that sits for each party. On one hand, James has someone he can pass down the responsibilities of being not only the face of the Lakers, but the face of the league to in Doncic. On the other hand, Doncic is just 26 years old, and Los Angeles would be wise to prioritize giving him a chance in the long run rather than going all-in for this specific season, which James might not fully align with.
Looking at the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook, the Lakers are tied for the sixth-best odds of winning the NBA Championship at +1400 and hold the fifth-best odds of winning the Western Conference at +950. James is tied for the 18th-best odds of winning MVP this season at +15000
James will command the attention of the sports world for another monumental decision, one that could kickstart one of the most highly anticipated farewell tours of all time. Time will tell what the future holds, but the retirement whispers continue to grow louder surrounding James.
