It’s just not Oregon State’s year, as the Beavers sit at 0-5 heading to the east coast in Week 1. I backed the Beavers in Week 1 against Cal and they got crushed. I gave them another shot in Week 2 against Fresno State, and they nearly won the game, but had several self inflicted wounds to blame. After a couple more losses, Oregon State almost broke through as a home underdog in Corvallis last Friday night. But, as this team has done all season, the Beavers let a double digit lead slip away in the fourth quarter, and Houston escaped with the win.
There’s simply no backing the Beavers this season. Every week is just a decision of whether you fade them or pass on this game. This is a week that I’ll be fading them, with Appalachian State in a strong spot at home.
The Mountaineers are off a tough road trip, playing their last two games at Southern Miss and Boise State. They got smoked in both games. That lines up with who App State has been for a decade, though. It losses the tough road games, but gets wins at home. The Mountaineers are 52-9 at Kidd Brewer Stadium over the last decade, including 4-1 last season and 5-1 in 2023.
After letting go of the rope on Friday night at home, this doesn’t feel like a bounce-back spot where Oregon State proves something. Although it’s been against elite competition (Oregon and Texas Tech), road trips have not gone well for the Beavers, losing by a combined score of 86-21.
While App State isn’t a powerhouse by any means, this is a good team with something to prove at home. I’ll keep picking on the Beavers and give the nod to the Mountaineers in a near pick’em.
