The Toronto Blue Jays hadn’t won a postseason game since 2016 — and on Saturday night, they made up for lost time. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered in the first inning and Alejandro Kirk went deep twice as the Blue Jays surged to a 10-1 rout over the New York Yankees in front of 44,655 strong at Rogers Centre.
The Yankees, trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, failed to capitalize with the bases loaded and no outs. The Blue Jays promptly responded by racking up four runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings, pouncing on a reeling Yankee bullpen whose struggles have spilled over into October.
Luckily for New York, the Yankees are primed for a bounce back with their ace Max Fried set to start Game 2. The southpaw boasted a 2.86 ERA with 189 strikeouts this season, and delivered 6.1 scoreless frames in Game 1 of the Wild Card against the Red Sox. He’ll face rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage, Toronto’s No. 1 prospect, who held a 3.21 ERA with 16 strikeouts in three starts since his Sept. call-up.
With Fried on the bump, the Yankees enter as -144 moneyline favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook to win Game 2 and shift the momentum before the series heads to the Bronx for Games 3 and 4. The Blue Jays are listed as +119 underdogs, and the total is set at eight runs.
