The coast air cools fast in San Diego, and Snapdragon Stadium stands tall under Friday night glare. San Diego State has climbed to 3–1, a start that doubles last year’s win pace, and the Aztecs enter their Mountain West opener laying -6.5. Across the field, Colorado State lugs a 1–3 record, their rhythm broken and confidence dented. The contrast is stark: one defense that hasn’t allowed a home point, the other offense still searching for sparks. Below is my prediction for CFB Week 6’s game between the San Jose State Spartans and the New Mexico Lobos.

SDSU vs. Colorado State prediction, preview
The Aztecs are built on stone. They rank sixth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 9.8 points per game, and their opponents manage a meager 239.8 yards per night. That sting is twofold: 93.8 yards allowed on the ground, 146 through the air. August Salvati already has 3.5 sacks, Owen Chambliss brings 29 tackles with backfield penetration, and Chris Johnson has returned an interception nearly a hundred yards. The unit throttled California 34–0 and then Northern Illinois 6–3, suffocating drives with third-down stops and turnovers. The red-zone profile is perfect: 100% touchdown prevention at home. Against a Rams offense ranked 131st in scoring, averaging just 15.3 points, the matchup reads lopsided.
Colorado State arrives fractured. They average 344.3 yards per game, but efficiency is absent. Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi has completed 53.7% with just one touchdown to two interceptions, while new starter Jackson Brousseau offers efficiency without bite, throwing for 266 yards on 72.5% completions but no vertical stress. Jalen Dupree brings 267 yards on 5.0 per carry, Lloyd Avant adds 209 on 7.0, yet the line hasn’t moved anyone above middle ground. Their red-zone defense is ghastly—121st nationally, conceding points on 100% of trips—while their own offense cashes drives into touchdowns just 62% of the time. That asymmetry is fatal against an Aztecs side that finishes clean.
Colorado State vs. SDSU pick, best bet
There’s enough variance here that CSU could feasibly backdoor the number. San Diego State’s offense is far from potent, ranking 108th in points per game at 23.8, and Jayden Denegal has three touchdowns to two interceptions. The Aztecs convert just 33% on third downs, 114th nationally, and last week against Northern Illinois they needed a field goal at the gun to escape 6–3. If CSU can force turnovers—already six gained this year—and pound Dupree and Avant into sustainable downs, they can hang within a score. History also favors Rams covers in San Diego, where they’ve gone 4–2 ATS in recent meetings.
Mountain West favorites of four or more on Friday nights are 54–3 straight up since 2016, and San Diego State is 3–1 ATS this year. Colorado State is 0–3 against FBS opponents in 2025, averaging 12.3 points in those losses. The implied score sits around 24–18, but effective offense/defense math pegs CSU at barely six points. The Aztecs hold teams 13.4 points below average scoring, and the Rams sit 7.4 points below opponent allowance. Fold that together and the projection lands 20–6, eerily aligned
Lucky Sutton could be the hinge, averaging 5.0 per carry and stacking 337 yards with patience that may pull safeties down. Jordan Napier might be the rhythm-breaker, his 25 catches for 293 yards giving Jayden Denegal the outlet if Sutton stalls. August Salvati may win early contact inside, and Owen Chambliss could spy gaps that reroute Scottre Dupree sideways. On the other side, Jackson Brousseau would need Armani Winfield to stretch coverage beyond ten yards, but San Diego State’s corners figure to stay sticky. One turnover, one blocked lane, and the scoreboard could slant red and black.
