We’re only six games into the English Premier League season, but some surprises are already forming. Chief amongst them is newly promoted Sunderland. They’ve dropped points in only one game thus far and sit sixth in the table. It’s an incredible start for a promoted side. Meanwhile, Manchester United continue to struggle, and Ruben Amorim’s head is on a swivel. Another bad loss could send him packing, and Sunderland might be the team to do it.
The Red Devils are -190 favorites to win and +340 to draw at DraftKings Sportsbook, while Sunderland is +500 to pull the upset.
Manchester United vs. Sunderland prediction, pick
It’s been a shock that United have lost half of their league fixtures. Nobody can fault losses to Arsenal and Manchester City, but dropping their last game to Brentford was rough. Worst of all was their Carabao Cup tie against Grimsby Town, where the plucky lower-division side defeated the Devils on penalties.
Manager Ruben Amorim has been under fire from all sides for his performance. They’ll need to turn things around soon if he hopes to maintain his position. And this Sunderland side is not giving much away.
Sunderland have conceded just four goals through six games, losing only once. Their stout defense, combined with a resurgent Granit Xhaka, has led to some great results. But this is their biggest test of the season so far, at least on paper.
I’m confident that Sunderland can contain this lackluster Manchester United attack, even at Old Trafford. But their own attack is the question. Even though United have let in 11 goals through six league games, Sunderland doesn’t have a lot of oomph up front. The talent gap certainly favors United, but I trust this Sunderland squad to pull a point out on the road.
