Braelon Allen suffered a knee injury in the Jets’ loss to the Dolphins this past Monday night and the back is expected to be placed on injured reserve, meaning Allen will be out for at least four games.
This season, Allen has been Breece Hall’s ($5,600) main backup, handling 24% of the running back carries for New York while logging 23.9% of the snaps. Now with Allen sidelined, Isaiah Davis ($4,000) is the next man up and he should overtake these duties as the No. 2 back for the Jets.
Allen was only available for six snaps this past Monday before getting hurt and following his exit, Davis saw his largest workload of the season. The 23-year-old logged 33.3% of the snaps and he saw three carries, including one red-zone rush. As a receiver, Davis ran a route on 29% of his team’s dropbacks and he saw a target on 20% of those routes. All these numbers set season-highs for Davis and he also posted a season-best 4.7 FPTS.
While this wasn’t an exciting output, Davis should be in line for 5-10 touches on a weekly basis until Allen returns, making him a viable pickup for season-long leagues if you are in need of a back, which is many fantasy managers right now in the wake of Bucky Irving (foot) and Trey Benson (knee) getting hurt. For this Sunday, Davis is facing a terrible Cowboys defense that is the second-worst graded unit on PFF this season and the back approaching double-digit FPTS in this beautiful spot wouldn’t be shocking.
There is also Davis’ value as a handcuff, as he would likely become the Jets’ top back if Hall got hurt or if the veteran was traded, which has been an ongoing rumor ever since Hall and the Jets didn’t come to terms on a contract extension this summer. The former second-round pick is in the final year of his contract and trading Hall before the trade deadline in November would make sense for New York if this 0-4 club keeps losing.
