One of the breakout stars of 2024, Cardinals tight end Trey McBride’s touchdown drought last year was the stuff of legends. The Pro Bowler had nearly 100 catches and over 1,000 receiving yards before catching his first score in Week 17 against the Rams. But he won’t have that kind of drought this year; McBride caught his first score of the year in last week’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Now, McBride has the chance to do more damage on Thursday Night Football. The Seahawks are visiting the Cardinals tonight. In Week 1, San Francisco’s tight ends combined for eight catches on eight targets for 44 yards and two touchdowns. Keep in mind that George Kittle exited early after gaining 25 yards and a score on their first drive. In Week 2, Steelers tight ends racked up seven catches on eight targets for 58 yards. Saints tight ends pulled in eight of 11 targets for 72 yards and a score.
Let’s do some quick math. That averages out to nine targets per game with 7.7 receptions, 58 yards, and one touchdown per game. And, aside from one drive against George Kittle, they have yet to face a truly elite tight end.
Even when facing the 49ers’ elite coverage duo of Fred Warner and Dee Winters, McBride managed 43 yards and a score last week. He’s going to eat up the middle of this Seahawks defense as the clear focus of the Cardinals’ passing attack.
