The Army Black Knights have had a bizarre start to their season. Last year’s squad was sensational, winning Army’s first-ever conference title in the American. They finished the season 12-2 with a conference title and a bowl win, one of the best seasons in modern history at Army. However, they lost a massive amount of talent, including quarterback Bryson Daily and running back Kanye Udoh. The 2025 team was predicted to struggle, and that was immediately evident in their Week 1 loss against FCS Tarleton State. However, they bounced back the following week and upset Kansas State on the road. After a bye week, Army lost to North Texas in overtime. This team is capable of beating teams like Kansas State because they always play tough, and the triple-option is hard to game-plan against. However, they can also lose to anyone in the country, making them a hard team to predict.
ECU Preview
ECU has met expectations to start the season. They sit at 2-2, having won the two games where they were favored, but lost the two games where they were underdogs. They hung tough on the road against NC State, only losing by a touchdown. They dominated the next two weeks, winning by a combined 94-3 against Campbell and Coastal Carolina. Last week, they lost to a top-25 BYU team at home. This is the start of ECU’s conference play, when the games really matter. They are 4-point home favorites against Army, so if they continue their trend of winning as favorites, they should take care of business in this game. ECU quarterback Katin Houser ranks fourth in the nation in passing yards this season and should be able to move it through the air against Army.
Army vs. ECU pick, best bet
For years, Army and Navy were both independent teams, not associated with any conference. Navy joined the AAC in 2015, and then Army finally followed suit in 2024. What made it so hard to face Army and Navy was their unique triple-option offense. It was unlike facing any other team, which is why they pulled off so many big upsets over the years. However, these American Conference teams have now faced Navy for over a decade and many of them played Army last season. That familiarity with these triple-option offenses takes away a lot of the advantage that the service academies had for so many years. They still have that edge in non-conference games, which is how Army managed to knock off Kansas State earlier this season. However, in this game, ECU should be able to hit deep shots with its explosive passing offense. ECU knows how to defend the triple option and should limit Army’s offense. Ultimately, the ECU offense should be too much and get them the cover.
