King of the End Zone Picks for Monday, Sept. 22:
The thought process behind making these selections is a bit complex. For starters, you should be targeting players you believe will score a touchdown. But to win the split of the bonus bets through the King of the End Zone promo, you also must keep the distance of the potential score in mind. Here are my three favorite King of the End Zone picks for the Lions at Ravens Monday Night Showdown.
1. Jameson Williams (+265 odds for an Anytime TD)
When considering big-play threats in this matchup, you cannot get far without bringing up Jameson Williams. The Lions’ standout currently leads the NFL with 21.8 yards per reception. He tallied 1,001 receiving yards last season and averaged 17.3 yards per reception. Williams tallied eight total touchdowns across his 15 games played last year and has found paydirt once already this season.
Williams has been an explosive athlete with game-changing raw skills since he entered the league. But he refined his skill set and has become more polished as a route runner and overall wide receiver. Detroit is still plenty creative in finding ways to put the ball in his hands and allow him to make plays. The Alabama product pulled in a 44-yard touchdown last week against the Bears, which marked the longest touchdown of that game. He also added a 64-yard reception in the victory.
Count on Williams having a few chances at a big play tonight and a clear path to recording the longest touchdown if he executes. The 24-year-old checks all the boxes as a key part of the offense, being a big-play threat, and Baltimore has also allowed the second-most passing yards in the league entering the week. Williams is my top candidate for the King of the End Zone promo.
2. Derrick Henry (-215 odds for Anytime TD)
In contrast to Williams’ big-play ability via his quick-twitch approach and eye-popping athleticism, Derrick Henry is explosive via attrition. The Ravens’ star running back uses his 6-foot-3 and 250-pound frame to run right at you until the opposing defense breaks. His combination of size, strength and speed is unique, and Henry is on the shortlist of the most difficult players to tackle in space. Plenty of defenders have found this out throughout the years.
The 31-year-old has 113 total touchdowns across his 138 games played and has led the league in touchdowns in three separate seasons. This includes as recently as last year, as Henry tallied 16 touchdowns on the ground, which tied for the most in the NFL, as well as recording two touchdowns through the air. He tallied a pair of rushing scores in the opening week matchup against the Bills, but he was limited to just 11 carries against the Browns with the 41-17 final score in mind.
It will not be as easy a path to defeating this Lions team, and expect Henry to be called on throughout. He will be the Ravens’ top scoring option around the red zone and can break free from anywhere on the field. Henry scored in 11 of the 17 games last year, including an 87-yard touchdown against the Bills. There likely will be quite a few people tailing Henry in this contest, but this is for good reason. Expect him to have a large role in the matchup tonight and for Henry to find paydirt for the third time this season.
3. Jahmyr Gibbs (-125 odds for Anytime TD)
Another dynamic running back who frequents the end zone will be lining up for the Lions in this matchup. Jahmyr Gibbs led the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns last year and 20 total scores. He is one of the most dangerous backs in the league, getting 1,929 yards from scrimmage on top of these touchdowns. Gibbs is off to a solid start this year with 154 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown already on the season.
He will match up with a Ravens defense that has allowed touchdowns to opposing running backs in both games so far this year (James Cook and Dylan Sampson). David Montgomery remains in the mix for carries, but Gibbs’ diverse skill set and ability in the passing game gives him an edge. There is also an athletic pop when the ball is in his hands that Montgomery cannot match. Gibbs has 32 touchdowns across his 34 career games and found the end zone in 13 of the 17 games last year, as well as twice in the playoff loss.
Expect him to remain a key part of Detroit’s offensive attack from start to finish tonight. He is a big-play threat who can turn a simple screen into a 60-yard score in the blink of an eye and has continued to see his role expand in the offense across his three years in the league. Feel confident in him receiving a handful of chances to score tonight and for a long touchdown to be completely in play.
