Wisconsin Badgers vs. Maryland Terrapins prediction, pick for CFB Week 4 on Saturday 9/20/25

Camp Randall has never been kind to Maryland, and the streak carries weight in a Big Ten opener. Wisconsin is 4-0 all-time against the Terrapins by a combined 144–54, with average wins of 22.5 points. That history looms over a Maryland team traveling for its first road test, led by a true freshman quarterback, into a noon kickoff with 75,000 Badger fans primed. The line reflects that edge, climbing from -7.5 to -10, with books signaling faith in Wisconsin’s home dominance with under 24 hours before kickoff. Below is my prediction and pick for College Football Week 4’s game between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Wisconsin vs. Maryland prediction, preview

Maryland’s September has been clean on the surface. Quarterback Malik Washington has thrown for 773 yards with six touchdowns against one interception, spreading it across Shaleak Knotts and Jalil Farooq. He has yet to be sacked across 100 attempts, but he hasn’t seen a front like Wisconsin’s. PFF’s passing panel tilts toward Maryland’s efficiency: a 76.1 passing grade, 107.0 rating when clean, 4.10% big-time throws, and only 1.64% turnover-worthy plays. Wisconsin sits at a 54.5 passing grade with a 104.6 rating when clean, 3.09% big-time throws, and a 4.12% turnover-worthy rate. That gap speaks to Maryland’s ball security, but the schedule explains part of it: strength of schedule sits 113th, while Wisconsin’s is 37th. Maryland also skews pass at 55.5% with -0.17 EPA per rush, underscoring why DeJuan Williams sits at 3.8 yards per carry and why their offense grades just 113th in PFF’s power rank despite clean stat lines.

Wisconsin’s defense sets the matchup tone. The Badgers rank fourth nationally against the run, allowing 46.3 rushing yards per game and 1.9 yards per carry. They’ve posted nine sacks, concede only 16.0 points per game, and force opponents into third-and-long, allowing 22.6% on third downs. Safety Preston Zachman owns two interceptions, and linebacker Christian Alliegro stacks four tackles for loss. PFF’s team board supports the trench edge: Wisconsin shows positive 0.06 EPA per run on offense and a top-half defensive power rank at 46th against a far tougher slate. They play slower at 64.7 snaps per game, lean 49.2% run, and control time at 33:44, a profile that squeezes possessions and magnifies Maryland’s third-down drag at 32.6%. Against Alabama they bled 382 passing yards, but that came with the run still stoned at 72 yards, which fits the Badgers’ identity in league play.

Quarterback Danny O’Neil has kept Wisconsin functional, completing 73% with five touchdowns, though four interceptions remain the warning light. He has absorbed seven sacks and must value drives in the low-total game state. Still, wide receiver Jayden Ballard threatens vertically at 23.5 yards per catch, while running back Dilin Jones brings 4.6 yards per carry to keep structure on schedule. If quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. dresses, the revenge subplot adds juice, but the core bet is Wisconsin’s defense against Maryland’s one-dimensional tilt. PFF’s defensive-offensive contrast illustrates the same idea in different language: Maryland’s defense grades better (13th power rank) than Wisconsin’s (46th), but Maryland’s offense sits 113th while Wisconsin’s is 47th, and Wisconsin’s schedule gap is massive. Maryland plays fast at 74.7 snaps, yet negative EPA per run and modest 0.04 EPA per pass signal hollow volume that shrinks against a top-five run wall.

Maryland vs. Wisconsin pick, best bet

Counterarguments lean on Maryland’s ball production and situational stopping power. The Terrapins allow 11.0 points per game, sit second nationally in red-zone defense at 42.9%, and carry a +6 turnover margin with seven interceptions. Edge Sidney Stewart owns three sacks, while linebacker La’Khi Roland housed a 100-yard pick-six. Maryland’s 76.1 passing grade helps arguments in favor of the dog, but their EPA profile and schedule warn the ceiling is propped up by opponents. The split that matters lives at the line: Wisconsin’s fourth-ranked rush defense versus Maryland’s 114th rushing offense, and Wisconsin’s 11th-ranked third-down defense versus Maryland’s 112th third-down offense.

Wisconsin is 4-1 to the under at home across the recent sample, both defenses sit top-40 in scoring, and both offenses carry turnover flags that kill red-zone equity. Wisconsin’s red-zone offense sits 85.7%, but that’s only 76th; Maryland’s red-zone defense sits 42.9%, second overall. Pace, run-game suppression, and third-down math point to long, field-position exchanges. Christian Alliegro’s disruptive pressure and Preston Zachman’s ball skills will tilt third downs. Malik Washington’s inexperience under duress will finally surface. Jayden Ballard’s explosiveness gives Wisconsin the finishing strike when possessions stretch.

Best bet: Wisconsin vs. Maryland u44.5 total points (-110)
