The Miami Heat were handed some bad news on Friday morning. All-Star Tyler Herro will receive surgery today on his left foot/ankle, per Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang. The guard won’t be active for the start of the regular season in October.
This injury comes at an inopportune time for Miami. Herro was expected to handle a heavy workload on offense following his stellar 2024-25 season. Through 77 games, the 25-year-old averaged 23.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists. The sharpshooter connected on 47.2% of his field goal attempts and 37.5% of his three-pointers. Without their leading scorer, the Heat will need more production from the rest of this roster.
Fellow All-Star Bam Adebayo could see a bigger role on offense as a result. However, the defensively-minded center already has a lot on his plate. Offseason acquisition Norman Powell is a somewhat similar player to Herro. The veteran doesn’t offer much in terms of playmaking, but he is a terrific shooter. Last season, with the Clippers, he averaged 21.8 points on 48/42/80 shooting splits. Youngsters Pelle Larsson, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis could all see more minutes from head coach Erik Spoelstra as well.
No matter how you slice it, the Heat are a far worse team with their best player inactive. There’s also a level of uncertainty to Chiang’s report. Herro missing the start of the season could mean a few games or a few months. The 25-year-old has struggled with injuries before, playing in just 42 of 82 contests during the 2023-24 campaign. Miami fans will be closely monitoring this situation for more updates.
