Time is running out in the regular season. That’s bad news for both the Giants and the Diamondbacks. The two NL West rivals are mere games behind the Mets for a wildcard spot. Following Tuesday’s walk-off win, Arizona will attempt to go three games over .500 with a series sweep this afternoon. That might not be so easy against a resilient San Francisco squad. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Wednesday’s meeting between the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Arizona is slightly favored (-111) over San Francisco, with the over/under set at nine runs. Let’s break down which side has the edge on DraftKings Sportsbook entering today’s contest.
Giants vs. Diamondbacks prediction, preview
Given where each side sits in the standings, this is the biggest game of the year for both teams. Fortunately for San Francisco, they’ll hand the ball to a pitcher with plenty of big-game experience. Even at 42 years old, Justin Verlander remains a quality major league starter. That didn’t look like the case for most of the first half. However, the veteran has locked in post-All-Star break. Over his previous ten outings, JV has notched a 2.44 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 57 strikeouts. That includes stellar performances against elite lineups such as the Cubs and Dodgers.
The three-time Cy Young winner will have quite the challenge on his hands this afternoon. The Diamondbacks, despite a trade deadline fire sale, are loaded on offense. Leading the way is the dynamic duo of Ketel Marte (141 wRC+) and Corbin Carroll (138 wRC+). In addition, four other current Arizona hitters have recorded a wRC+ above 100. Arizona has smacked 99 homers at Chase Field, the league’s eighth-highest mark at home. That could spell trouble for Verlander, who has struggled on the road (4.58 ERA).
Pitching has prevented the D-Backs from emerging as a National League contender. Several high-upside arms have looked off in 2025, including Brandon Pfaadt. The former top prospect has undeniable upside, but he has yet to put it all together. Through 157.2 innings of work, he’s posted a 5.31 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 131 strikeouts. Clearly, those numbers leave much to be desired. On the bright side, the right-hander has found some recent success at home. Over Pfaadt’s last six appearances at Chase Field, he’s produced a 2.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 29 strikeouts.

Best Bet: Diamondbacks ML (-111)
On paper, this is a difficult prediction to nail down. Verlander has been terrific recently, but these Arizona bats are red-hot. Ditto for Pfaadt, who appears far more comfortable pitching in Phoenix. As long as the D-Backs get a decent pitching performance, they should earn the sweep on Wednesday.
