For the first time since 2020, Bayern Munich and Chelsea will face off. The German side have got the better of this matchup in history, winning three and drawing twice in the last five games between the sides. I expect a similar outcome on Wednesday in what should be an entertaining game.
Bayern enter this one in good form, as they usually are in the Bundesliga. They’ve been dominant in their three matches, winning all three, scoring 14 times and conceding twice. A +12 goal difference after 270 minutes of league play tells you all you need to know. This team can score goals in bunches.
For Chelsea, things have been a bit trickier. Yes, the Premier League is tough, but they have only won two of their first four after dropping points with draws against Crystal Palace and Brentford. It’s still a decent start for the Blues, who sit fifth in the league after four games with eight points.
Wednesday’s game marks Chelsea’s first Champions League match since the 2022/23 campaign. They will be full of confidence after their Club World Cup victory this summer and excited to be back in Europe’s best competition.
Since then, Bayern Munich have made a semi-finals appearance, followed by a quarter-finals run last season. They played seven Champions League games at the Allianz Arena last season, winning five, drawing once and losing once. Chelsea certainly couldn’t ask for a much tougher welcome back to the top flight of European soccer.
The German side are at home, they’re in better form, and they have UCL experience throughout the team. I can only see this game ending up one way, and that’s with a comfortable win for Bayern.
