What happened to Yordan Alvarez? Live injury updates for Astros vs. Rangers 9/15/25

UPDATE: Alvarez was designated with a left ankle sprain.

The Houston Astros opened Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers with two walks by Jeremy Peña and Yordan Álvarez. Carlos Correa then hit a dribbler back to the mound. Jack Leiter fielded the ball but slipped as he tried to throw it to first base. The ball sailed over Jake Burger’s head and bounced into the right-field foul area. Peña waltzed in to score, then Álvarez hustled around and scored the second run.

Unfortunately, Álvarez appeared to tweak his left ankle as he stepped on home plate. He eventually limped into the dugout and immediately went into the clubhouse.

Zachary Cole was the substitute. Cole has accrued only 12 plate appearances this season, contributing a home run, two runs, and four RBI. Throughout his minor league career, his walk rate was above 10% and his ISO was above .200, but his strikeout rate consistently sat above 30%.
