Jonesboro heat and a 4 p.m. kickoff put No. 14 Iowa State in a dangerous letdown window. The Cyclones just survived Iowa in the Cy-Hawk rivalry, but now they walk into Centennial Bank Stadium as 21.5-point favorites with every expectation to roll. The last time they faced Arkansas State, it ended 52-7 in Ames. This time it is different only because of the road trip, the humidity, and the fact that a ranked Big 12 team is stepping into a Sun Belt cauldron. That environment matters, but the gap in execution and efficiency is wide enough to keep the line honest. Below is my prediction and pick for College Football Week 3’s game between the Arkansas State Red Wolves and the Iowa State Cyclones.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Arkansas State vs. Iowa State prediction, preview
Rocco Becht has been a revelation through three games. He’s thrown for 595 yards on 68% completions with six touchdowns and zero interceptions. He has added a rushing score and 44 ground yards, proving he can extend plays when protection falters. What stands out is how he handles clean pockets—his passer rating sits at 126.0 when untouched, and Iowa State’s pass unit carries an 84.6 grade overall. His favorite weapons have been the tight ends. Benjamin Brahmer already has 13 catches for 106 yards and three touchdowns, and Gabe Burkle adds 10 for 149 yards and a score. They’re chain-movers and red-zone finishers. On the outside, Brett Eskildsen stretches coverage with 162 yards at a gaudy 23.1 yards per catch. This is a balanced passing attack that doesn’t give away possessions. Iowa State’s passing efficiency shows up in the data as well, generating +0.16 EPA per dropback compared to Arkansas State’s defense allowing -0.24 EPA, a mismatch that Becht can exploit repeatedly.
The run game has been steady rather than explosive, but it doesn’t need fireworks against a defense ranked 111th in power ratings. Arkansas State has allowed negative efficiency on the ground, giving up -0.23 EPA per rush, and Iowa State’s 52.5% run rate leans into that weakness. Expect a heavy mix of Carson Hansen and Abu Sama once the Cyclones grab control. The offensive line has kept Becht upright for two straight games, and that stability should continue against a Red Wolves front that has produced just three sacks all year, with Cody Sigler the lone bright spot at 1.5.
Arkansas State’s offense is efficient on paper but volatile in practice. Jaylen Raynor has thrown for 470 yards at a sparkling 72% with four touchdowns, yet he has been picked twice and has taken sacks in each outing. His best asset is accuracy on rhythm throws, but under pressure the cracks show. Chauncy Cobb has been his most reliable target with 135 yards on nine grabs, while backs Ja’Quez Cross and Kenyon Clay have contributed modest totals on the ground and through the air. The problem is volume: Cross has just 36 rushing yards across two games, Clay 69, and no back is controlling pace. That leaves Raynor forcing plays against a defense that just limited Iowa to 214 total yards. Advanced splits show Raynor’s turnover-worthy play rate at 4.44% compared to Becht’s 1.04%, a gap that tilts hidden possessions toward Iowa State.
Iowa State vs. Arkansas State pick, best bet
The Cyclones’ front seven has teeth. Marcus Neal has already stacked 21 tackles, including three for loss and a sack, while Tamatoa McDonough has two sacks and eight total stops. Jamison Patton has taken one interception, and Kooper Ebel adds production from the second level. Domonique Orange has been a disruptive interior anchor, drawing attention and freeing others. This is a unit that allows just 13.7 points per game, ranking 43rd nationally, and they thrive in the second half. Their defense forces negative plays at a higher clip than Arkansas State sustains successful ones, reflected in Iowa State holding opponents to 0.04 EPA per rush while Arkansas State’s run game has failed to reach positive expected value.
The market tells the rest. Iowa State opened around -20.5 on DraftKings and pushed to -21.5. The total sits at 55.5, but DKN splits show almost all money is riding on the under. That combination screams trust in Iowa State’s control of tempo. They average 67.7 snaps per game, and their red-zone efficiency spikes when Brahmer and Burkle are involved. Arkansas State averages 80 snaps but hasn’t turned volume into efficiency. Their defense gives up 497 yards per game and 40 points, numbers that collapse when a ranked team brings clean execution. On third downs, Iowa State converts 51.3% of attempts while Arkansas State’s defense allows 55% conversions, a gulf that sustains drives and stretches the margin.
This isn’t complicated. Iowa State has the sharper quarterback, the more dangerous tight ends, and the steadier defense. Arkansas State can flash pace, but against this opponent the ceiling caps early.
We’re taking the Cyclones to cover the spread. Iowa State covers with rhythm, leverage, and Becht’s turnover-free command.
Best bet: Iowa State -21.5 (-110) at Arkansas State
