Friday night in Louisville, the energy inside L&N Stadium will feel like a test disguised as a showcase. James Madison arrives unbeaten, carrying Sun Belt credibility and a reputation for punching above its weight. The Dukes just throttled Weber State for 313 rushing yards and forced three interceptions, but stepping into an ACC venue against a Jeff Brohm roster built for a playoff chase is different terrain. Louisville handled Eastern Kentucky by 34 despite sloppy penalties and turnovers, and that efficiency gap becomes more visible under brighter lights. This is where the Cardinals’ depth, continuity, and explosive talent should separate. Below is my prediction and pick for College Football Week 2’s game between the Louisville Cardinals and the James Madison Dukes.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Louisville vs. James Madison prediction, preview
The offensive equation is straightforward. Cardinals QB Miller Moss brings downfield confidence and produced 223 yards on 8.9 yards per attempt last week. Two interceptions marred the debut, but his launch points were clean, and when he pushed tempo, Louisville ripped off chunk plays. Isaac Brown is the axis. He ripped 126 yards and two scores on six carries, building off a 2024 season where he averaged 7.1 yards per rush. Against Eastern Kentucky, Louisville generated 0.8 points per play, a ruthless drive-finishing clip. With Brown forcing lighter boxes and Moss stretching coverage, the Cardinals present a balance James Madison simply hasn’t faced.
The Dukes will try to anchor behind Alonza Barnett’s efficiency and George Pettaway’s burst. Barnett threw for just 130 yards against Weber State, operating conservatively at 5.9 yards per attempt. Pettaway and Wayne Knight combined for 188 rushing yards at nearly 10 yards per carry, hammering a defense that couldn’t match physicality. That formula wins in the Sun Belt, but Louisville’s defensive front is faster and more disciplined. The Cardinals produced a 29% sack rate on dropbacks in Week 1 and allowed only 36% completions. Tackles win leverage, linebackers scrape clean, and coverage closes space quickly. If James Madison falls behind schedule, Barnett and Matthew Sluka will be forced into long downs where Louisville’s rush packages overwhelm.
James Madison vs. Louisville pick, best bet
Louisville’s volatile, though. We know this. Twelve penalties and three turnovers kept Eastern Kentucky within striking distance far too long. Brohm’s track record as a heavy favorite is uneven, and James Madison has thrived in underdog spots, upsetting North Carolina with 70 points two years ago. The Dukes are well-coached and opportunistic, intercepting three passes already this season. Still, regression toward discipline favors Louisville. Moss has historically protected the ball better than last week, and Brohm teams clean mistakes after early slop. James Madison replaced twelve starters and promoted new coordinators, so the cohesion advantage lies firmly with the home side.
The market reflects this dynamic. Louisville sits -14.5 with a total near 55.5. The Cardinals have gone over in nine of their last thirteen, while James Madison has leaned under in seven of ten. Game state points to Louisville’s ability to dictate pace, create explosive plays, and sustain red-zone efficiency that forces the Dukes to chase. James Madison’s ground attack shortens possessions, but once Louisville stacks stops, the separation grows. Difference-maker Isaac Brown should eclipse 100 yards with another long touchdown, and Moss’s timing with Chris Bell and Caullin Lacy punishes JMU’s secondary. Louisville covers late behind explosives and discipline.
Best bet: Louisville -14.5 (-110) vs. JMU
