When playing in Coors Field during hot weather, the pitchers are of paramount importance.
San Francisco’s second ace, Robbie Ray, picked a tricky time to make a start at Coors Field. He’s given up 3+ earned runs in three of his last four starts; that had only happened six times in 24 previous starts. He’s issuing more walks than usual over that stretch and giving up hard contact, an unfavorable equation for a start at elevation. With the Giants chasing down hope of a Wild Card berth, they’ll need Ray to hold down the fort in order to gain a game on the Mets.
His opposite number, Germán Márquez, is not having the same kind of year. According to Baseball Savant, his pitching has cost the Rockies 32 total runs this year. That’s a 1st percentile mark in all of the MLB. He’s in the habit of getting shelled; in his only start against the Giants this season, Márquez gave up a pair of homers and five total runs in 4.1 innings. And that was a road game.
What’s worse for Márquez is that this Giants offense is red-hot. They’ve hit 32 home runs in their last 16 games, socking a dinger in each of those games, getting close to a franchise record. It’s a bad time to be facing these Giants, and they’ll go home with a series sweep after today with a big offensive performance.
