Two of the National League’s best are set to battle it out. The Phillies enter Wednesday’s matchup atop the NL East at 80-58. However, Philadelphia still has to fend off a resurgent Mets squad down the stretch. The same is true of the Brewers, currently at 85-54. Despite owning the best record in baseball, the pesky Cubs are just five games behind Milwaukee. Which of these two division leaders will come out on top tonight? Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Wednesday’s showdown between the Phillies and the Brewers.
The Brewers are favorites (-115) over the Phillies, with the over/under set at nine runs. Let’s break down which side has the edge on DraftKings Sportsbook entering tonight’s contest.
Phillies vs. Brewers prediction, preview
In a league filled with inconsistent arms, Aaron Nola might be the most perplexing. The former All-Star has been a reliable presence in Philadelphia’s rotation throughout his 11-year career. However, something has been off about the right-hander in 2025. Over 12 starts, he’s accounted for a 6.47 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 66 strikeouts. To be fair, injuries have played a role in Nola’s poor play. Regardless, it’s difficult to predict what the Phillies will get out of the veteran on any given night.
Over his last four starts, Nola has surrendered a whopping total of 21 earned runs (10.50 ERA). That doesn’t bode well going into tonight’s matchup. The Brewers are averaging 5.12 runs per game, the third-highest total in baseball this season. Nine different active Milwaukee hitters have posted a wRC+ of 100 or greater. No matter where you look, there’s no escape when facing this lineup.
Even if Nola falters, that doesn’t mean the Phillies can be counted out. After all, their offense is stocked with high-caliber sluggers and elite contact hitters. It’ll be up to Jose Quintana to keep Philadelphia at bay. The veteran has been everything Milwaukee could have asked for this season. Through 114.2 innings of work, he’s notched a 3.69 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. However, he did cough up six runs last week against the Diamondbacks. It’s part of a worrying trend for the 36-year-old, who is far better on the road (2.57 ERA) than at home (5.04 ERA).
Phillies vs. Brewers pick, best bet
Best Bet: Phillies vs. Brewers over nine total runs (-115)
There’s unquestionable talent on the mound tonight. Still, neither arm is someone bettors should feel confident in, albeit for different reasons. Nola remains a work in progress, struggling to recapture his old form. Quintana’s numbers appear solid, but his issues pitching at home are worrying. To top it all off, both of these lineups rank among the National League’s best. Run production shouldn’t be too hard to come by on Wednesday for either club.
