SMU hosts East Texas A&M at 9 p.m. ET in Dallas on ACC Network. Quarterback battle shapes up as Kevin Jennings for SMU and Ron Peace for East Texas A&M. Park factor favors SMU; Ford Stadium’s new grass and crowd noise punish thin FCS depth. Night kickoff trims heat yet preserves sticky Dallas humidity and fatigue. This is the first documented regular-season meeting between these programs. Below is my prediction and pick for College Football Week 1’s game between the SMU Mustangs and the East Texas A&M Lions.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
SMU vs. East Texas A&M prediction, preview
I’m laying the lumber with SMU and backing a wire-to-wire cover. Jennings returns after 3,245 yards, 65% completions, and 23 touchdowns last season. His 354 rushing yards and five scores punish static four-man fronts. R.J. Maryland passed on the draft and remains Jennings’ red-zone hammer. Jordan Hudson posted 39 catches, 422 yards, and five scores; his slot wins create easy explosives. SMU averaged 36.5 points and 429.5 yards in 2024, and tempo stretches FCS depth to breaking.
The trench script screams one-way traffic. Logan Parr anchors a line that supported 167.6 rushing yards per game last year. East Texas A&M allowed 179.1 rushing yards per game and 4.4 per carry. That mismatch creates short fields, high success-rate snaps, and clock-draining touchdown drives. At home, SMU has gone 14-1 in its last fifteen, averaging nearly 49 points. Lashlee’s teams are 26-2 when scoring 30 or more; that threshold should fall early.
Here’s the opposing angle, and why I reject it. The Lions closed 2024 winning two of three and believe they can hang. Peace delivered 2,535 yards with 16 touchdowns, but 14 interceptions at 56.3% completions invite mistakes. Christian Jourdain brings 51 grabs, 683 yards, and six scores; he’s their separator. They even held two FBS foes to three combined first-half points last year. That optimism collides with a defense replacing nine starters and allowing 31.5 points per game.
East Texas A&M vs. SMU pick, best bet
SMU’s defense does reload, yet the matchup still tilts sharply. Last year’s unit allowed only 100.2 rushing yards per game, seventh nationally. East Texas A&M must throw; its run game produced 81.8 yards per game. One-dimensional offenses feed SMU’s pressure calls and trap throws. Isaiah Nwokobia’s 100 tackles and veteran range erase slants and rally to screens. The Lions also surrendered 98 points off turnovers while generating only 38; negative scripts repeat here.
Market and schedule context reinforce the cover. SMU opens as a playoff aspirant with Baylor looming next week. That urgency supports an aggressive first-half script, not four quarters of throttling down. Jennings, Hudson, and Maryland need live timing before the Bears arrive. East Texas A&M travels only 70 miles, but roster depth won’t travel in the fourth quarter. Home form, pace, and personnel advantages converge into a decisive margin. Final bet: SMU -48.5, and I expect Mustangs by fifty.
Best bet: SMU -48.5 (-115) vs. East Texas A&M
