Right to it, then. Probable quarterbacks: Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza versus Old Dominion’s Colton Joseph. Memorial Stadium’s turf plays neutral and the wind projects negligible. Forecast reads 74°F, 50% humidity, seven-mph breeze, and no precipitation at 2:30 p.m. ET. FS1 carries the broadcast for a ranked home opener. Curt Cignetti counters Ricky Rahne in the programs’ first meeting. Below is my prediction and pick for College Football Week 1’s game between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Old Dominion Monarchs.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Indiana vs. Old Dominion prediction, preview
Indiana’s 2024 profile popped: 41.3 points per game and 426.4 yards per game with ruthless efficiency. The defense allowed 15.6 points per game and strangled explosives. Indiana skill players averaged 13.8 yards per catch last season, the Big Ten’s best rate, which punishes ODU’s deep-ball leaks. Elijah Sarratt posted 53-957-8 and extends an FBS-best 38-game reception streak. Mendoza brings 69% accuracy, over 3,000 yards, and only six interceptions, while Roman Hemby adds 607 rushing yards and 273 receiving yards from Maryland.
Old Dominion’s defense offers openings I exploit. The Monarchs allowed 410.4 yards per game and 237.8 passing yards per game last season. They surrendered passes of 40-plus yards on 4% of attempts, a persistent vertical crack. Their coverage allowed 3.9 tight-end receptions per game, and Indiana’s transfer tight end Holden Staes fits the seam-buster role. On the other side, Mikail Kamara delivered 68 pressures and nine sacks, and Aiden Fisher stacked 111 tackles with sideline-to-sideline speed. Indiana’s front produced a 24% tackle-for-loss rate and allowed just 2.2 yards per touch in the red zone, a brutal finishing profile.
Respect the Monarchs’ angle before I torch it. Joseph logged 1,623 passing yards with 11 touchdowns, plus 647 rushing yards and 11 rushing scores. ODU’s ground game averaged 209.7 rushing yards, and its red-zone offense ranked No. 1 nationally. Linebacker Jason Henderson returns after a 170-tackle 2023, with Mario Thompson’s 9.5 TFLs and Kris Trinidad’s 5.5 sacks flanking him. ODU went 6-6 ATS and covered four of its last five as a road underdog, and six of seven losses stayed within one score. Indiana answers with 176.1 passing yards allowed, only 6% explosive passes allowed, and corner D’Angelo Ponds erasing throwing lanes. Kamara versus preseason All-Sun Belt tackle Zach Barlev tilts toward pressure and negative plays.
Old Dominion vs. Indiana pick, best bet
Indiana finished 9-4 ATS and 3-1 ATS when laying 23.5 or more. The favorite covered in 11 of Indiana’s last 12 lined games, and the Hoosiers own 12 straight non-conference home-opener wins. They went 8-0 at home last season and outscored non-conference visitors 160-24. Indiana is 7-0 when recovering at least one fumble since 2023, while ODU is 2-10 when losing one. Lines toggled between -22.5 and -23.5, and the weather screams efficiency, not variance.
Edges align across personnel, explosiveness, and defensive disruption. Sarratt threatens vertically while Omar Cooper’s speed widens safeties and sets up Hemby’s one-cut gashed lanes. Staes drags linebackers into conflict and punishes those 4% deep-shot busts behind them. Joseph meets stacked fronts, delayed creepers, and Ponds driving on outs, which flips field position fast. Old Dominion’s quarterbacks averaged 192.6 passing yards per game last season, and that ceiling crashes in Bloomington. Indiana separates early, rotates late, and still lands the number. Hoosiers roll.
Best bet: Indiana -24.5 (+100) vs. Old Dominion
