With the first day of Week 1 in the books as well as much of the Friday slate, college football’s return continues at 8 p.m. with a meeting between the Baylor Bears and Auburn Tigers. This one takes place in Waco, Texas, as these two Power Five (Four?) programs go toe-to-toe in the evening. One team sees a new quarterback under center via the transfer portal as they look to revive a stagnant offense, while the other squad tries to sustain their strong production with continuity under center.

Jackson Arnold 2+ passing touchdowns (-119)
The Tigers brought in a high-profile transfer with quarterback Jackson Arnold over the offseason. The former Oklahoma Sooner appeared in 10 games as a sophomore in 2024, completing 62.6% of his passes for 1,421 yards and 12 touchdowns. The efficiency was respectable and he limited interceptions as well, protecting the football well with just three picks on the entire year. While he didn’t really air the ball out a ton last year with a low 5.8 yards per attempt and just 142.1 yards per game, Arnold now sees the opportunity to revitalize this Auburn offense. The Tigers finished 38th in yards per game last year with 411.4, and their passing game averaged 31 attempts per contest with 246.9 yards on average, 41st in the nation.
Replacing NFL draftees Jarquez Hunter and KeAndre Lambert-Smith won’t be easy, but returner Cam Coleman finished second on the team with 598 receiving yards and eight touchdowns while Malcolm Simmons comes back with a larger role this time around. Four-star wideouts Eric Singleton Jr. and Horatio Fields both transferred in as well, so Arnold should have even more weapons to work with too. Baylor finished the 2024 season ranked 82nd in opponent points per game (28.& and ranked 100th in opponent passing yards per contest (246.3). If that defense doesn’t come out looking stronger to start the new season, Arnold can make an instant impact and toss a pair of touchdowns in what might become a high-scoring affair.
Sawyer Robertson 250+ passing yards (-111)
Since we’re predicting something of a shootout for this game, what better way to capitalize than with some prop bets on Baylor’s star quarterback, too? Sawyer Robertson played some excellent ball in his second season with the Bears last year, throwing for 3,071 yards and 28 touchdowns. He completed 62.2% of his passes while averaging 255.9 yards per game, certainly a solid mark. His top two targets, Josh Cameron and Ashtyn Hawkins, combined for over 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024 and are both back for another campaign. Tight end Michael Trigg also returns in position to assume a larger role in the offense.
This program finished last season with 440.9 yards per game, 14th-best in the nation. The Bears also ranked 32nd in passing yards per game with 259.9 while averaging 8.1 yards per pass, the 29th-best mark. They’re set up for another impressive season on the offensive end, and while the defense may not improve all that much, the circumstances do create a need for Baylor to air the ball out in order to win games. Sure, the Auburn defense posted respectable numbers against the pass last year, but Robertson’s the kind of talent who can make things happen on the gridiron. This was a high-octane attack last time we saw them, and I don’t expect that to change much heading into 2025.
