Willson Contreras update: Suspended six games for outburst vs. Pirates

Major League Baseball suspended Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras for six games following his outburst on Monday night vs. the Pirates.

After a called strike three, Contreras yelled at the umpire and bumped him before being restrained by his coaches. The slugger continued to yell, then threw his bat at the umpire, which struck his own coach. For a finale, he threw a bucket of gum on the field.

An undisclosed fine comes with the suspension. He is expected to appeal the suspension, which would allow him to play while MLB decides on his appeal. For what it’s worth, the pitch was clearly a strike. You’d think a former catcher would know his strike zone.

Contreras, 33, is batting .261 with 19 home runs on the season. Though the Cardinals are all but eliminated from the playoff mix, he’ll want to continue what has been a good year at the plate.
