As the season enters its final five weeks, only the division title races out west look like they will come down to the wire. Entering tonight’s Game 2 between the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres, San Diego trails the Los Angeles Dodgers by one game in the NL West and the Mariners are 1.5 games behind the Houston Astros atop the AL West.

Tonight’s game will start at 9:40 p.m. ET in Seattle, with Dylan Cease set to toe the rubber for the Padres and Luis Castillo starting for the Mariners.

Let’s break down this matchup with some odds and lines at DraftKings Sportsbook.

San Diego Padres at Seattle Mariners prediction, preview

Yesterday went rather poorly for San Diego, as Los Angeles won its clash against the Cincinnati Reds and the Padres lost, 9-6. Seattle’s win allowed it to close the gap by half a game on the Astros, who didn’t play, and catcher Cal Raleigh made history by becoming the first backstop in league history to mash 50 homers in a single season. With 13 more over the season’s final 30 games, Raleigh would break Aaron Judge’s American League record and likely secure one of the most surprising MVP awards in league history. Big Dumper will need to keep raking if the Mariners, who have gone 13-9 this month behind an offense that has finally started to live up to its massive potential, want to edge out a San Diego squad that has been a top-11 unit on both sides of the ball.

Cease hasn’t been part of that solution, as he’s continued his disappointing season. The 29-year-old has a pair of top-five Cy Young Award finishes in the last three seasons but has taken a step back in 2025, posting a 4.71 ERA, though his 3.65 FIP indicates that he’s been rocked undeservedly. Advanced stats are fairly kind to him, as his 95th-percentile whiff rate and 90th-percentile strikeout rate suggest that he’s plenty capable of getting guys out, but his 21st-percentile barrel rate and 22nd-percentile ground ball rate could pose a problem for a lineup featuring Raleigh, Eugenio Suárez, Julio Rodríguez, Randy Arozarena, and Josh Naylor. Unsurprisingly, Seattle has recorded barrels and fly balls at top-10 rates.

Castillo would’ve easily had the edge in the pitching matchup a few weeks ago, but he’s put together two stinkers in a row, combining to give up 19 hits and nine earned runs over his last eight innings, walking three and striking out seven. Statcast figures indicate that Cease has been better than the 32-year-old Dominican, who ranks above the median in just two of 12 categories. In particular, hitters have laced Castillo’s pitches, as he has a 15th-percentile average exit velocity, a 14th-percentile barrel rate, and a seventh-percentile hard hit rate. Still, the Padres have hit the ball softly this season, with the third-lowest barrel rate, the second-lowest hard hit percentage, and the seventh-lowest average exit velocity.

San Diego Padres at Seattle Mariners pick, best bet

Best Bet: Over 8 (-109)

Neither Cease nor Castillo is a particularly strong pitcher, and three of both teams’ last five games have gone over the run total. Despite T-Mobile Park being the league’s most pitcher-friendly venue, the Mariners have averaged a solid 4.22 runs per game at home.

Strong Lean: Seattle Mariners Moneyline (-115)

Ultimately, in a battle between two fairly evenly-matched teams (and evenly-matched starting pitchers), I’ll take the side that has the American League’s fourth best home record against a team with a losing record on the road. The Pacific Northwest has been experiencing unseasonably warm weather, which should help the fly ball-happy Mariners.
