Here’s my prediction and pick for Wednesday’s Braves vs. Marlins matchup.
Braves vs. Marlins prediction
Atlanta and Miami split the first two games of the series and now play a third matchup to determine the series.
Joey Wentz is on the mound for the Braves following a disastrous outing against the Mets. He allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.
While he has a 5.25 ERA this season, Wentz has been a lot better with the Braves. He spent time with the Twins and Pirates before becoming a starter in Atlanta. This change of scenery has led to a 3.79 ERA with Atlanta, though a few of his outings have been poor. Some, however, have been excellent, pitching multiple zero run games for the Braves.
Ryan Gusto is starting for the Marlins, making his 17th start of the season. It’s his first year in the majors, and it hasn’t gone super well. He’s pitching to a 5.05 ERA through 98 innings and allowed five earned runs in his last start. His second most recent start came against the Braves in which he allowed three earned runs on four hits in six innings.
This isn’t going to be the most exciting pitching duel. Hitters should have a field day.
Braves vs. Marlins pick, best bet
I’ve previously believed in Wentz’s resurgence as a member of the Braves, but last start against the Mets did not give me confidence. He’s still an underwhelming pitcher, even if he’s had some good starts since arriving in Atlanta.
Gusto doesn’t give me much confidence either, so I’m staying with the over at 8.5. Atlanta scored nine runs in the top of the ninth on Tuesday, so it’s possible the team can keep that momentum going on Wednesday.
