With the #2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Jaguars selected WR/CB Travis Hunter out of Colorado. Jacksonville traded up to get the Heisman winner, and gave up a lot of capital to secure their guy.
Hunter played both ways in college, but it was his emergence as a wideout that escalated his stock dramatically. He had his best season as a WR by a landslide in 2024, recording 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. In his first two collegiate seasons, his career highs were 57 receptions, 721 yards and five scores. It was a drastic increase in production last season, and one of the reasons he came away with the Heisman trophy.
Expectations are sky high for Hunter in year one, and the anticipation of what he’s going to look like going both ways is exciting for Jags fans. What’s not exciting for fantasy owners, however, is that he will be playing at least some defense this season. So was landing in Jacksonville good for his fantasy value?
Well, it depends on a few factors. First, if he were drafted elsewhere, would they allow him to play two positions? That’s a question we don’t know the answer to. Secondly, how does he fit into the Jaguars offense? The answer to the second question is that Hunter is the perfect fit. Brian Thomas Jr. is the alpha of this Jaguars receiver room and the clear-cut number one option, but after that, things are wide open. Dyami Brown, Parker Washington and Trenton Irwin are among some of the other receivers in the room. Hunter should have no trouble slotting in as the WR2 from day one.
Assuming he suits up more on offense than defense, I think Hunter will end up being a great addition in fantasy football this season. Jacksonville doesn’t have an alpha tight end on the roster either. Hunter should finish the season with the second most receptions, yards and touchdowns for the Jaguars behind Brian Thomas Jr.
