MLB Picks and Player Props August 22, 2025

Manny Machado 2+ H/R/RBI (-115) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Manny Machado has always been a reliable bat against left-handed pitching, and this season is no different. Through 140 at-bats, he owns a .357 wOBA, a .243 ISO, and a 133 wRC+. His production improves even further against the four-seam fastball—the primary pitch of tonight’s starter, Blake Snell. Against that pitch, Machado has posted a .415 wOBA with a .366 ISO. Snell, who throws his four-seamer nearly 50% of the time, has struggled with it, as opposing hitters have produced a .344 wOBA against the pitch. With Machado hitting between two other strong bats versus lefties, I like his chances of recording at least two combined hits, runs, or RBIs.

Milwaukee Brewers over 4.5 runs (-105) vs. San Francisco Giants

It’s been a rough start to big-league life for rookie Carson Whisenhunt, who was called up by the Giants in late July. Through three outings, he’s allowed eight runs on 13 hits—including five home runs—along with seven walks over 14.1 innings. That works out to a 5.02 ERA, but his 7.01 xERA and 7.44 FIP suggest the damage could be even worse than what’s shown in the box score. Now he draws a tough matchup against a Brewers lineup that performs well against left-handed pitching. While Milwaukee hasn’t shown much power versus southpaws, tonight’s projected lineup carries a combined .356 wOBA against them. Given Whisenhunt’s struggles and lack of efficiency at the major league level, it’s hard to expect anything different from what we’ve already seen in his first three starts.

Blue Jays over 2.5 runs (+105) through first five innings vs. Miami Marlins

The Blue Jays will take on Ryan Gusto, who’s making his second start in a Marlins uniform. During his time with the Astros, Gusto bounced in and out of the rotation and struggled to find consistency as a starter. Across 15 starts, he posted a 5.38 ERA, allowing a .334 wOBA, with a 3.99 FIP. Tonight, he faces a Blue Jays lineup that has the ability to produce against right-handed pitching. Even without Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the projected lineup owns a combined .377 wOBA and a .177 ISO versus righties. I expect Toronto to pressure Gusto early and push across at least three runs within the first five innings.
