MLB Best Bets: Top MLB predictions and picks for Wednesday 8/13/25

Midweek and a glorious full slate of midseries! I’ll have predictions and picks up for the Astros vs. Red Sox, Blue Jays vs. Cubs, and Giants vs. Padres games up shortly. Erstwhile, based on my preliminary research, here are my three favorite baseball bets for tonight’s slate, separate from my game predictions and previews.

Shohei Ohtani o5.5 total strikeouts (-115) at Angels

I’m attacking Shohei Ohtani’s strikeouts, and I’m not blinking. DraftKings hangs 5.5, and that number is light. Action Network The matchup gifts punchouts on command because the Angels lead MLB in strikeouts this season. They also sit near the bottom in wRC+ and runs per game. That’s a green light for strikeout volume. The stage fits. It’s a late rivalry spot in Anaheim, with first pitch at 9:38 p.m. Eastern. Ohtani’s workload stabilizes, and the leash stretches in statement games. I want the fastball riding above barrels and the sweeper stealing early strikes. That pitch mix fuels chase, then finishes hitters late. The Angels’ free-swinging profile amplifies each whiff window. They lengthen counts and walk straight into two-strike traps.

In 2025 he’s punching out 32.9% with only a 5.3% walk rate, and holding hitters to a .239 xwOBA with 27.7% hard-hit and 87.0 mph EV allowed (2.37 ERA, 2.18 xERA). The Angels lead MLB in team K% at 26.0%, juicing the strikeout ceiling.

Six punchouts sets a clear bar, and the board undervalues the environment. Market inertia hasn’t caught their strikeout bloat, even after repeated spikes. DraftKings is offering the softest ceiling for a dominant arsenal. I’m locking over 5.5 strikeouts and pressing the edge.

Gunnar Henderson o1.5 total bases (-105) vs. Mariners

The form is real, and the volume is bankable. Henderson brings top-of-order plate appearances and thunder to every swing. His 2025 line shows production that translates directly to bases, not vibes. The ledger reads .284 with an .822 OPS as of this week. That’s sustained thump in a lineup that feeds him pitches to damage. The matchup helps, too. Seattle visits Baltimore at 6:35 p.m. Eastern, and Camden amplifies pull power. The probable board lists Logan Gilbert for Seattle, a strike-throwing righty.

Henderson’s fastball hunting punishes early-zone heaters. I want loud contact to either gap, then the add-on single later. This year he’s sitting on a 92.8 mph avg EV, 52.4% hard-hit, and a .357 xwOBA. He’s +5 runs vs four-seamers (+0.9 RV/100) with a 66.3% hard-hit rate against them.

The Mariners’ bullpen has innings to cover, opening multiple late paths to two bases. The schedule confirms the timing, and I like the lineup context in that window. Henderson’s approach keeps pressure on every count. He doesn’t need a homer to clear this number. One double clears. Two singles clear. A single and a walk can still produce another swing. I’m paying for premium plate appearances and elite bat speed. The market keeps him at a routine threshold. I’m not overthinking a premium bat in his home yard.

CJ Abrams o1.5 total bases (+115) at Royals

CJ Abrams’ total bases price is misaligned, so I’m striking. Washington visits the Royals today and Abrams’ impact plays immediately. The park rewards line drives and speed, and Abrams supplies both like clockwork. The power arrived early this season, then spiked again in May. He torched Baltimore with two homers and a double during Washington’s series sweep. That surge wasn’t a blip; it confirmed a step forward. Slumps existed, then Abrams recalibrated his approach. The staff emphasized zone control and all-fields contact, and the results followed. That’s growth that sticks, not noise.

I’m buying a hitter whose 2025 arc shows plate-discipline refinement and dangerous bat speed. Royals arms—Seth Lugo particularly—challenge in-zone, which suits Abrams’ plan. He punishes first-pitch fastballs and flips mistakes into instant bases. 2025 shows an 8.0% barrel rate, 40.8% hard-hit, 89.1 mph EV, and a .340 xwOBA; sprint speed is 28.2 ft/s. He’s +4 runs vs changeups and +3 vs sinkers this season, with added damage vs sweepers.

Speed turns singles into stress, and stress turns grooves into gappers. The lineup around him adds protection and extra plate appearances. This number isn’t priced to his current threat level. DraftKings posts the familiar 1.5, and I’m stepping in without hesitation. The data points converge on consistent base accretion. I want two bases and a clean ticket.
