St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras exited Tuesday’s game early due to an apparent injury.
During an at-bat in the fourth inning against the Colorado Rockies, Contreras was hit by a pitch for the 18th time this season. The ball made contact with his foot, and whether from pain or frustration, he broke his bat over his leg before exiting the game.
Nolan Gorman took over at first base following the injury.
Contreras slashes .255/.344/.443 on the season with 105 hits, 57 runs and 65 RBI in 114 games. The 33-year-old veteran leads St. Louis in a handful of categories — his 29 doubles and 16 home runs are both team-highs, as is his RBI tally.
The Cardinals trailed 2-0 at the time Contreras exited against the Rockies. St. Louis holds a 61-59 record on the campaign, good for fourth in the NL Central though they’re still within striking distance of a Wild Card spot.
