San Diego Padres vs. Boston Red Sox prediction, pick for Sunday 8/10/25

These two teams feel eerily similar in their divisional/wild card hunt battles, don’t they? Should make for a great afternoon rubber mach. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Sunday night baseball game between the Padres and the Red Sox.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Padres vs. Red Sox prediction, preview

Petco Park’s pitcher-friendly dimensions pair with a marine layer and mild 75-degree temps to blunt carry. Brayan Bello’s 49.6% ground ball rate and 0.93 HR/9 slot perfectly into this run-suppressing environment, especially against a Padres lineup ranking 29th in home runs. Bello has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last nine starts, and his .507 OPS allowed with runners in scoring position ranks top five among qualified starters. That kind of situational stinginess changes the math on run expectancy.

Dylan Cease is an xERA darling at 3.41 despite the inflated 4.60 ERA. His .221 expected batting average and 30.6% strikeout rate give him swing-and-miss cover even when command wavers. At home, Cease trims his ERA to 3.72, with a 12.2 K/9, and the first-time-through dominance (.451 OPS) can neuter Boston’s early-game scoring bursts. The Red Sox hit well, but their 5.02 runs per game average is propped by Fenway’s hitter’s park factor. Away from home, they’re a .247/.315/.403 offense. Far less punishing.

San Diego’s bullpen tilts this further toward the under. They lead MLB in relief ERA (2.98) and holds, and three high-leverage arms—Robert Suarez, Mason Miller, Jason Adam—are all sitting under a 2.20 ERA. Boston’s pen has been shakier, but Bello’s recent efficiency means Alex Cora can bridge cleanly into late-inning matchups without overexposure.

Red Sox vs. Padres pick, best bet

Boston’s five straight overs are a surface-level trap. tThe ballpark, starting pitcher profiles, and weather all argue regression.

Yes, Cease can be volatile, and yes, Boston has been cashing overs. But the whiff rates here (Cease 36% vs. RHH, Bello 93rd percentile OPS with RISP) forecast stranded runners, not crooked numbers. Add in both teams ranking top five in opponent batting average, and sustained rallies become unlikely.

This shapes up as a game where a single mistake could decide it. Not a string of three-run innings. I like a 4-3 game, advantage Sox here (in case you were slavering for a ML bet). The sharper play isn’t picking sides in a near coin-flip moneyline, it’s betting on elite arms, bullpen depth, and Petco’s suppressive nature to keep the scoreboard from lighting up.

Best bet: Padres vs. Red Sox u7.5 total runs
