Last night on WWE SmackDown, a massive tag team match headlined the event. Logan Paul teamed with Drew McIntyre to take on John Cena and Cody Rhodes. After WWE SummerSlam, it seemed like Brock Lesnar was primed to be John Cena’s next opponent, but that changed when Logan Paul interrupted him.
The match ended after Logan Paul hit John Cena with a low blow. Drew McIntyre then hit Cody Rhodes with two Claymores through the announce table.
1. John Cena’s babyface run has begun
On WWE SmackDown before WWE SummerSlam, John Cena ended his five-month run as a heel and became a good guy again. However, heading into WWE SummerSlam, it was unknown if it would last, but he reassured the crowd that the old Cena is back at WWE SmackDown.
After WWE SummerSlam, Brock Lesnar asserted himself as John Cena’s next opponent on his retirement tour. But that match will not be the former 17-time Champion’s next match. Since Logan Paul stepped up to him on WWE SmackDown, a singles match between John Cena vs. Logan Paul became official for Clash in Paris on August 31.
2. Cody Rhodes has found his next challenger
After WWE SummerSlam, the new WWE Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes didn’t have a clear challenger standing in his way. Well, that quickly changed. Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre has been searching for a title opportunity for a long time and struck at the perfect moment last night. Even though it isn’t official yet, it seems likely that Cody Rhodes will defend his WWE Championship against Drew McIntyre at Clash in Paris.
3. Montreal was an incredible crowd
The crowd was chanting “Cena” and “Thank you Cena” throughout the opening segment when former 17-time WWE Champion John Cena appeared. The pride of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Sami Zayn, surprised the audience when he came out to wrestle Solo Sikoa in a singles match. Every time Zayn returns to his hometown, he receives a loud ovation, and he got that on Friday night.
Montreal has always been a great crowd, and John Cena admitted that the WWE was afraid to return to Montreal after the iconic “Montreal Screwjob” at Survivor Series 1997.
