Their opponent, the Rangers (60-56), are 1.5 games behind the Yankees for the American League’s final wildcard spot. With both sides sending All-Star pitchers to the mound, this game could come down to the wire. Which squad has the edge in this inter-league showdown? Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Friday’s matchup between the Phillies and the Rangers.

Entering 2025, both of these teams expected to rank among the league’s best in offensive production. That’s held true for the Phillies, who rank ninth in baseball with 4.69 runs scored per game. Leading the charge for this lineup has been Kyle Schwarber, who has launched a National League-best 40 home runs. He’s joined by several superstars, including Bryce Harper (140 wRC+) and Trea Turner (112 wRC+). If there’s a knock on the Fightins this year, it would be depth. Just five regulars in this lineup have recorded a wRC+ of 100 or greater.
Even if they’re top-heavy, the Phillies present a significant challenge for Rangers starter Merrill Kelly. The veteran, acquired last week from the Diamondbacks, has put together another solid season. Through 134.1 innings of work, he owns a 3.22 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 127 strikeouts. Over five career meetings with Philadelphia, the righty has delivered a stellar 2.73 ERA. That includes a five-inning, one-run outing on May 2nd. Turner has had success in this spot, going 12-for-30 (.400 batting average) against Kelly. However, all Phillies batters combined have a career .732 OPS against the 36-year-old.
Scoring has been a difficult task for the Rangers this season. Texas has averaged 4.11 runs per game, the sixth-lowest mark in baseball. With that being said, this group has turned things around over the past few weeks. Since July 1st, the Rangers have scored a total of 163 runs, fourth-best in the league. However, the team has recorded baseball’s ninth-lowest OPS (.672) vs. left-handed pitching during that time. That’s bad news entering a matchup with one of the sport’s best southpaws.
Cristopher Sanchez has posted some eye-popping numbers: 2.40 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 145 strikeouts. At this point, it’s fair to call the All-Star Philadelphia’s co-ace alongside Zack Wheeler. Over his last ten appearances, the 28-year-old has posted a 1.73 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. That includes an eight-inning, five-hit shutout last weekend against the Tigers. This Rangers lineup, while improved, will have its hands full with this flame-throwing lefty on Friday.
